I expected to have a few problems with my "new" to me 2004 scooter, and here is the first real one. I stopped at a light and noticed the clutch grabbing slightly, so when I got home I pulled it all apart and found one of the spring mount ears on a clutch shoe had busted off. The clutch appears to be in good shape otherwise, with under 5K miles on it. Is there something that causes this? Possibly because this is a heavy 150 size chassis with a 50cc 2t? Should I replace the shoes, or just get a new better clutch? I have priced the shoes, and they seem high compared to just a new clutch.

I'd just replace the whole clutch another stocker unless you could get a good savings on the shoes. Much easier. I think the cause is it's made in China basically. The metals aren't great. It's not something that should happen, but it's not the first time I've seen it. Most likely your next stock clutch will be just fine.

I was able to pick up a used clutch locally for $20.00 with markings exactly like the original clutch. I put it on, and I am back on the road. I noticed that there seems to be a lot of "play" in the transmission. I can turn the input shaft back and forth about 1/8 to a 1/4 of an inch. That seems excessive to me. My RX8 does not have near that much play in it. The support bearing in the CVT cover is ok, and the input shaft bearing is just a little wiggly.
