OK, so here goes... I've read over and over about people doing wheelies and whatnot with their scooters... I'm just wondering how much of it is true or not. I don't care about wheelies necessarily, I just like to go fast! So my question is what kind of horsepower are we talking about having to say you've got a "fast" scooter... I have a Genuine Roughhouse R50, de-restricted, minor mods to carb, CVT, etc. and it will go 55 on the stock speedo. Fairly fast considering I've spent more time and effort than $, . What can your 49cc do?

You can definitely do wheelies with work. It's not necessarily a HP figure that gives you wheelies. Some will do it from torque, like the big stroker motors, and some will wheelie with aggressive clutch and CVT setup for high revs. Some people can wheelie a bone stock scooter with technique. Short wheelbase scoots make wheelies much easier than long wheelbase scoots.
Way back when my first Triton was a 49cc it would cruise right around 40, with me being 285lb, but wind or hills dropped speed easily. I could get the stock speedo over 50MPH, but that usually involved help from a tailwind and I had to tuck down.
I think what it takes to be considered fast just depends who you ask. When I first started riding with a 70cc I had a lot of ppl ask how fast it would go. When I said 50-55 they either said it was fast or asked if that was all. One really thought I was lying and that it went much faster. None of these ppl rode scooters. I dunno if some people understand quite how small 49cc is.

My Venny is a mostly stock setup with Dr Pulley 5g sliders and airbox mods with a Mikuni stock carb setup. I've done a little weight redux on it, but other than that it's just the same as when it was shipped. Top speed as of now is 46, cruising daily at 41-43 mph depending on the hill or headwind. Being my first scoot, I consider that fast, but I know more can be coaxed out of it.

I have an antique Zuma (1997). It's cylinder is ported, it runs a LV ZX pipe, has light rollers, and heavy clutch springs. I messed up, and put low profile tires on it, making an up-gear necessary. When it hits, it pulls the front end, which can make a fella awful busy in a corner............ I am not a small guy @ 6'2" and about 235 lbs. With a tail wind I have seen a "real" 57mph (which is real scary on the dodgy rubber front end), tucked, no wind, flat and level, I have seen 48mph. Next up: I have a 70cc kit on the shelf waiting....... and a trailing link front end to install. www.bikepics.com/yamaha/zuma2/97/pics.asp
