so since i couldn't find what was causing my electrical issues, i did an engine swap with a twin scooter. only this time the starter just spins for a couple seconds then sounds like just one gear in the starter is spinning wildly, starter gone bad? no luck with kickstart either. i thought it was the stator last time...same issue maybe? i have spark when i kick it. hoping this is just a bad starter, i've had high hopes for this scoot...so far nothing but 3 weeks of pure pain in the arse lol -my spark was a yellowish color

make sure the cooling fan is spinning while your cranking it over. if it is you probably dont have compression

its not catching the gear on the variator outer drive face and this is usually what happens when the battery is nearly dead.
But it could also be the starter bendix itself.
When the starter spins it makes the bendix spin and centrifugal force makes it jump out and catch the vari outer face thus turning the motor. if the starter does not spin fast enough due to a dead or dying battery there will not be enough centrifugal force for the bendix to jump. A worn out bendix or an incorrect bendix will do the same.....
spin catch ZIIINNNGGGGGGGG!!!

this is very true. and exactly what i thought had happend to project hustler. but as it turns out the exhaust valve spring broke and held the valve open. it sounded exactly like the starter wasnt catching the variator gear. besides its pretty easy to rule it out

Yeah sounds like a low battery to me or a relay that is slowly dying or a starter motor that is slowly dying. Any of these can also cause weak spark if the engine isn't spinning fast enough when you press the button.
When I do a belt/CVT inspection and cleaning I always clean out the inside of the Bendix with a liberal amount of WD40 and then after I towel it off and then put a dab of grease in both of the bushings it spins in before re-installation.
