Seems everybody here is so screwed up when it comes to moped laws in this state. went to DMV here to get a moped tag and the lady there says "there's no such thing. You don't have to register mopeds. I've seen tags that say MOPED but there not official SC dmv tags I don't know where there getting them from? " went to PD here "yes you have to have a moped tag" so did a search and found this not only i'm I confused so are the cops. so they came out with this. www.coastal.edu/safety/pdf/SCHP%20Moped%20Book%202011-Final.pdfMy question is why is a metal "MOPED" tag required that's not DMV issued?

I got pulled over a couple times two weeks ago, and both times the SC cops told me I needed to have a MOPED tag. The 2nd time I was pulled over he made it very clear that it had to be a reflective white tag with black lettering. Been to Tennessee and back and did not get pulled over once

yeah there on some sorta moped kick but mainly looking for the ones that go over 30 mph so they can write you for no insurance and no M.C endorsement if you don't have either. But i got my Moped tag for the Linhai from the same place i got the Taotao one she didn't bat an eye at just having a bill of sale.

Greenville . When you go to the DMV DO NOT say " I want to register my moped or scooter " Instead say motorcycle . Even though many scooters are 49cc and considered a moped by many , scooters are the body type of a motorcycle . I had one say " we do not register mopeds " but they do if is in the guidelines . I hate how the word scooter is mostly thought of as a moped instead of scooter . I was zooming on the " Redneck Autobahn " and had a guy follow behind me into a gas station and asked " WTF kind of moped is that ? " I had taken off fast and out ran all of the cars near me at the red light . I find its safer if you have a fast scooter to jack rabbit on green lights so you can have the road more to yourself them be surrounded by cars . If you have a putter then yield to cars and so they go on down the road away from you and not interfere with the enjoyment of riding a scooter and not increase your risk of injury from them not paying attention etc . I did have a moped tag at first and got so much hate as being labeled a " DUI offender " as I never had one , do no drink or do dope and have a moped , motorcycle and automotive driving license . With the MC the flak is 90 % less and no hassle from the police by going over 30 MPH with a moped tag . I can go 50 MPH on my 2T 49cc and plan on making it faster with a BBK very soon and enjoy it when I can and not worry about getting hassled . With a MC tag , full face helmet , boots and gloves the police leave me alone as I have some protection where many do not , and I drive with sense . Those with no muffler , broken body panels , no tag , no helmet and a 12 pack of beer in a milk crate on the rear they get profiled . I hate how so many ignorant ( censored ) think ALL 49cc riders are DUI offenders on a " liquor cycle " since license suspended . I know several on a 49cc that have drivers license but needed a cheap ride and use little gas as a car was out of their budget . To me it made more since to buy something new with a warranty that used worn out car in need of repairs along with the fun factor . I love two wheeling since I was 14 with many mopeds , 2 scooters and several cruiser motorcycles I have owned . Many 49cc scooters are stolen since thieves know most are not registered or even have a title so its very hard to prove ownership or track the VIN . I have mine insured and registered along with many photos of the VIN and serial #S . Keep the title at home in a safe place like fire proof lock box or security box at a bank . Ok to have a photocopy of it and copy of the bill of sale should you get pulled over and the cop asks if it is stolen as many can be when left unsecured . I use so many locks MacGyver would have a hard time stealing my scooters lol . If you do not have health insurance , its a great idea to have PIP , personal injury protection , and or MedPay which will help pay for any scooter related trip to the ER , like if a tire blows out and you wreck on your own instead of from that of an others liability . I also have road side assistance so no bothering anyone should I have an issue in the wee hours . I ride at 4 am sometimes since its cooler weather , the drunks are home or in jail and I have the road to myself so I can enjoy the ride with out watching the idiots on the road that surround me in heavy traffic . I have full coverage on my Echarm since I paid so much for it . I had insurance and a MC on my Honda Spree 22 years ago and it cost 48 a year to insure . I could have gotten minimum insure for 35 a year with multi vehicle discount but opted for 5,000 med pay and roadside for a whooping 56 dollars a year . I was one of the first to get a moped license 14 YOA 26 years ago for a pedal moped as without bicycle pedals it is a motorcycle even if its 49cc . Here is a recent local news story on scooters AKA mopeds www2.wspa.com/news/2012/apr/26/moving-violations-rise-mopeds-creates-confusion-ov-ar-3681530/ I was blown away that by law you can not get a DUI while driving drunk on a moped as any motor vehicle it should apply to . I met a guy on a scooter who was so drunk he slurred his words and staggered into a gas station . He said he had just rode through a license checkpoint a few minutes earlier . The cops asked if he had a license and he told them know since he had a DUI and they let him drive away . Shame on the police for not getting this menace off of the street and ticket those speeding 10 MPH or so but other wise legal and sober . If you go to any news web site and search scooter or moped there is so many that have died on the spot from a wreck and almost all did not have on a helmet . A helmet is cheaper a new face or head . No eye protection bothers me too as sun glasses can be as little as a dollar , very easy to get dirt or bugs in the eye(s) , harder to see at high speeds from the wind , and shield from rain . New eyes cost around 300,000 providing you find a matched set of them and team of surgeons and doctors

Well, that's a lot like the gun laws in my state where anyone with a clean record etc can get a permit to acquire firearms, and with another fee- a concealed carry permit with NO test required at all. The ONLY thing you have to do is attend a lecture class for the carry permit and you don't even bring a firearm to the class or take any tests of any kind. That means a new gun owner who never handled a gun in their lives can buy a gun and carry it even if they don't know how to use it and never practiced with it. YET, to ride a motorcycle you have to take a written test and then a road/skills test and pass both!
