I hate calling scooters mopeds. There's a shirt in my shop that gets the point across quite bluntly. ( Contains explicit language. DON'T CLICK if you will be offended by the F-Bomb.) That first one is in your neck of the woods. The second one would be pretty fun to mess around with. I rode Bob's Tomos moped around a bit. It was pretty fun for something that goes 30MPH. Feels much more similar to riding a bicycle without having to pedal. I used to love the horn. It's powered off of the motor and you could change the pitch depending how much you revved it up. My friends are all kinda goofy, so we couldn't mess with the horn without someone laughing at it. I would seriously consider one if it were cheap just for the horn. ;D I had this one in my favorites for some time. I was going to buy it and went back and the price shot up. It was $475 for a long time, then all of the sudden it jumped to $999. It's the same style of 4 stroke that was in my midbikes. A 125cc+ manual clutch motor could easily do wheelies and better than 60MPH with the right gearing. I think that would surprise a lot of folks. I've got an 88cc engine sitting right under my steps in my Cateye bike that would bolt in and should be capable of 50MPH anyway. www.americanmopeds.com/scooters-mopeds-50cc-150cc-180cc-250cc/scooters-50cc-mopeds/moped-scooter-50cc-electric-start-air-cooled.html

Bob sold his to someone who then sold it to a friend of Bob's. Then the friend was selling it for $200 and I almost bought it. I didn't really have the money to spare though and that was right when I started on the Sunl. I would have bought it if my father could have rode it, but he had a partial knee replacement years ago and I didn't like the idea of it being pedal start only. I wish I just parted with the money and bought it though. $200 for a 70cc, piped, Tomos moped in really good condition and I passed to fix a Sunl that has never been over 42MPH. It would do mid to upper 40s. As far as I know Bob sold his 150 too. Either that or it's sitting at his old house rusting I guess. He has a Triumph Daytona now.

I hate mine being called a Moped to! But, here in Florida the laws were written when Mopeds were popular, so the laws only mention Mopeds not Scooters. So if you go to the tag office and tell them you have a 50cc Scooter they may tell you you have to get an M/C endorsement. But if you just call it a Moped (or Moped Scooter) you can get it registered with a tag with no hassles. So as far as the law is concerned I'm riding a Moped.

But luckily the cops here don't seem to really pay me any attention. I've gone by them running about 40mph at 3AM and they never gave me a second glance.

Here in Cali a 50cc scooter is considered a "Motor Driven Cycle" and requires an M-1 motorcycle license, yearly registration and insurance. Hell, you have to have an M-1 or an M-2 to ride a Goped here. The state gov't has their greedy hand in everybody's pocket. The sad part is they are still broke. www.dmv.ca.gov/motorcycles/motorcycles.htmThe only silver lining is that the moped/scooter laws are so vague that most cops don't know the real deal. I've been pulled over for no headlight and speeding and handed them a regular license with no M-1 endorsement and the cops never mentioned anything about it.

It's simple here. They call them mopeds or motor scooters. 30MPH speed limit. You need a valid driver's license to operate one, but no motorcycle endorsement. They do not need tags/registration/insurance. I tried to tag mine and they wouldn't let me even when I told them it was modified above 49cc. I've had cops pass me when I was doing nearly 60MPH on the shoulder where it's a 50MPH speed limit and never stop me. That said, I always slow down when I see them. Sometimes I just don't see 'em till it's too late.

Are you required to ride of the shoulder where your at? Because here in Florida they WILL pull you over for riding on the shoulder. It clearly states you are to ride full on in your lane just like any motorcycle. Mainly because (and it's happened too me) if you get over to the right they will run you off the road trying to go around you. Now I'm not sure if it's the law or not but I never take my Scooter on a divided highway with a speed limit over 45mph. Just because I think its to dangerous holding up traffic like that on a highway. But thats my opinion of course.

If the speed limit is 30MPH or less I can ride in the normal lane of travel or on the shoulder if available. I almost always use the normal lane of travel in that situation. If the speed limit is 35-50MPH I am supposed to use the shoulder if available. If there is no shoulder I believe I am supposed to stay to the right of the lane and yield to regular traffic. In reality, I speed up to the speed limit or above and ride where I want in the lane (assuming there is no cop around). If the speed limit is 55MPH or above I am not even allowed on the shoulder. That part of our laws has kept me from taking much farther rides, although I do understand the safety concerns. That is the main reason I want a bigger scoot that I can tag. I love to ride and it sucks being limited like that.
