Greetings,
I have posted an ad for moped service / repair on craigslist. I think $30 an hour sounds great. A local shop here charges $65/hr then adds on more charges for particular services. A girl paid $300 for a "carb overhaul" (aka rebuild kit and bigger jet), oil change and fuel flush. I saw the receipt. It blew my mind. $65/hr x 2.5hr + $65 for carb + $35 for fuel flush and $35 for oil change.
I have a set of tools that I can take with me and come to the customer. I have already fixed a couple of mopeds through this ad and have more requests.
My questions is how much do you think I should charge? I need to get a flat rate so I don't just continue guessing. Main things I have done:
Carb Clean
Air filter clean
Oil Change
Fuel Tank Flush
CVT Belt Replacement
Roller / Slider weight install
Valve Adjustment
New Piston / Rings Install
Light bulb Replacement
Stator Install
And making a service call and showing up to a customers place is convenient for them, that has to be worth something if I can accomplish a field job. Especially, if I have the part needed on hand. Stator, CDI, Belt, Weights, Light Bulbs, Coil, Spark plug, Carb, etc.
I just replaced a friends roller weights with slider weights on a 2-stroke, with hand tools and a couple small breaks it took about 45 mins. I just checked out a customers 4-stroke that needed a new belt and weights. It took less than 30 mins. Again using hand tools, but a cordless drill would speed up the time significantly.
My longest job involved cleaning the carb and the air filter. Turns out someone installed his Cam a few notches off where it was supposed to be. Corrected that and did a valve adjustment. And charged him $50. Which I was happy with. I probably should have charged more, but beating the competition on price and quickness of service, gets word of mouth advertising, which is the best form of advertisement.
Anyone care to share how much they paid to a legit shop? or how much they are charging for a variety of things?
Thanks!
