I checked my tire pressure at the gas station the other day. The front wouldn't even give me a reading! Must have been really really low. Had never checked. I had even done my brothers and noticed a huge difference in speed a couple of months ago... Just never crossed my mind that mine might not be right. I went with 34 or so in the front, and the rear I got as close to 40 as I dared. The tires both are rated at 40. After doing that it has a huge difference in handling. I don't know if I necessarily like it, but I'm sure it makes me faster in the straights.

Tire pressure does make a huge difference in speed and coasting. You wont coast as long on flat tires as you will on properly inflated ones, which means your engine is working harder to keep you at the same speed. You might not like the handling now, but you'll get used to it and you'll wonder why you didnt inflate your tires earlier

Tire pressure is one of those things that should be checked on a pre-ride inspection along with properly functioning lights, switches, etc... I don't check mine every ride though. At least have a look weekly or something. I run mine at 36psi, but I'm fat. lol I do pump 'em up to 40ish if someone wants to race. Doesn't make much of a difference at all, but I need all the help I can get.
