Ever lose one or both of those little square or rectangular nuts that fit inside the battery terminal? You checked at the local hardware store, but they don't have a nut that fits in there that isn't for a tiny bolt. The square nuts they carry are even too big unless you use a toothpick sized bolt. Don't worry, it's very simple to replace those little suckers cheap without much work. I had a customer that lost both terminal nuts, so I took a couple of pics to help anyone else that may have this issue.
I stopped by the local hardware store and picked up a couple of 10-24 bolts that are 3/8" long. 10-32 (the fine thread version) or metric 5mm bolts should be a nice fit as well. You could take the existing bolt in and match it up to a nut, but they are usually a soft metal and bolts this size are cheap. It's just worth replacing them to me. I purchased two standard 10-24 hex nuts to go along with the new bolts. I believe it was just under $1.00 for the nuts and bolts.
As they are, 10-24 nuts wouldn't fit in the battery terminals.
I used a pair of vice grips to get a firm grip without putting my fingers in danger for the next step.
I used a bench grinder to flatten out 2 points of the hex nut, directly opposite of each other. You shouldn't need to knock much off. Just flatten the tip out a little. You could use files or a dremel type tool if you don't have a grinder.
If you shaved enough off, there's your brand new battery terminal nut. If not, take a little off at a time until the nut will fit the terminal.
It's just that easy. No need to stress over those hard to find parts.
