well when i changed my variator a few weeks ago i noticed that my stock rollers were quite worn in places, and i wish to upgrade to sliders. My weight is 230lbs and my bike is a 2012 jonway thunder. Its a bigger bike, and right now i seem to be struggling up hills. the variator helped tremendously, but i would just like to upgrade and change out my worn out sliders. can anyone give me an ideal slider weight?

Only you can determine the correct slider weight for your tastes. My best educated guess would be 5.5g. though.

Lighter weights will definitely help with the hills. How light though it just depends. Don't forget you can mix and match weights so long as you alternate them. I've read in more than one place as a rule and i've found it to be true, you want to go at least 1 gram lighter with the slider vs. whatever the ideal weight was with the roller if that makes sense. And then again it just all depends. Anyhow, first step is to figure out how heavy your stock rollers are now and subtract 1 to 2 grams than subtract one more and that's where i'd start with the sliders.

so i have heard most stock weights are 7 or 8 grams. so since im a bigger guy i was thinking 5 or 6 grams? but i dont wanna lose top end. i feel like my rollers have worn away as i usedto hit 37 and now im at about 34 35

It sounds like you have a h.p. problem more than anything else. Stock 50cc can only do so much no matter how much you fine tune the cvt. I'd start with what I suggested two posts above as well as exploring the boards some to see what worked for other people. Good luck

well im not sure. i was running rich, poked a hole in my muffler and that made me run alot better. I have a good amount of power, no lag or bogging (anymore) but i can def feel my weights wearing down, as when i checked them 300 miles ago they had clear wear/flatspots. i just would like to know what a good weight of slider would be so that i dont lose any top end but gain a little aceleration. i know sliders offer more variation so i assume that would aid as well in performance

If you're willing to buy 2 sets, you could get 5 and 7g and mix to make 6g as well. That way you could tune to get the best result.
5-6g seems most popular for sliders with these. Most like to drop 1g for sliders vs rollers that are working well. Doesn't work that way for me based on watching my tach and performance, but maybe I'm missing something. At any rate, I think 6g would be what I'd try if not willing to buy 2 sets to tune a little with.

A lot of your speed loss could be from a worn, narrower belt. Even w/o replacing the belt and going with the 5.5g sliders it's doubtful you would lose more than 1 mph.

About 1 month ago i switched out my rollers to sliders. Now at the time i had no real clue as to what i had in, but i was rolling a bit higher on the RPM's then i liked at WOT 8-9,000 rpm.. not good on a 4t if you value any mileage/life out of the little engine. So i went into it a bit blind but with a good ideal on what i needed. Went with a set of 7G and 5G sliders (Dr. pulley). Tried the 7G's and found a bit of a slower start to mid range but top end was fine but after a few day's.. I had enough. Found a scale at work and weighed the STOCK rollers that came with MY scooter.. all 6 rollers where about 5.1 - 5.3 grams (5G rollers ) I went with 3 - 5g and 3 - 7g sliders to = 6g all around. That hit the sweet spot for me, all the way around. Now i do well at stops and starts and hit 7,000 RPMs on flat roads at WOT and 8,000 on any slight down hill and i have been told many, many times by co-workers that im going 45mph or a bit better. Not bad for a mostly stock 50 (might be a 63cc) scooter. Now given im not a heavy guy (125lbs) i, if i was 200lbs or more would go with a set of 5.5G sliders or 2 set's one set of 5G and one set of 6G. Just what worked for me and my current riding style. If i did all in town riding.. i can install just the 5G sliders for in town stop and go. If i want a good ole road trip (WOT) i'll put in the 7G sliders. Now if you know just what gram slider you want union materials the makers of the Dr. pulley can custom make any weight you need. www.unionmaterial.com/rollerweight6.htmIf your just wanting 4,5,6 or 7 gram sliders then you would be best to go with a good HONEST vender (any vender that currents this form). well around my area there are quite a large amount of hills, which leads me to think that 6g sliders would be my best middle ground option. right now at WOT i am hitting about 7800rpm, then it shifts down to about 6k. the bike only has about 1400 miles on it, so im sure the belt is fine

I'm 225lbs. and I live in the hills some of which are quite steep. I found that 4.5 gram Dr. Pulley sliders worked best for me with a stock clutch and variator. I suggest getting some 4.5's and a set of 6's then you can try the 4.5's on their own (27 grams total) and if they are too light you can put in three 6's and three 4.5's alternating them to equal a total of (31.5 grams total) and if still too light then use all of the 6's to equal 36 grams total.

^^ yes i was thinking buying just 6g. sliders. and prob a set of 4g sliders too. that was i have 4 5 6 to experiment... if i end up being short on money il prob just buy 5g and if it blows il deal with it for a week until i get paid again :riding:
