:welcome: to the forum.
It'd be a good idea to check the jetting since you messed with the airbox. Check your spark plug gap (should be around .024" - .028), all connections of the ignition system, and make sure your ground wires are all secure.

Yeah removing any air restrictions can and usually will make them fall on their face at wide open throttle.

Since it's been sitting for so long I would have a look at every single vacuum hose for cracks, and also check the rubber intake boot where the carb mounts for cracks. They usually crack where the clamp is on the underside. A little sea foam or some other gas treatment in the gas tank can't hurt. I've also seen where a cracked spark plug wire or spark plug boot will allow the spark to jump to the frame or the cylinder head before it gets to the plug causing a high speed miss so check the plug wire and boot out carefully. Other times the two wire connectors on the spark coil are loose. If they are loose remove both of them and squeeze them a little with pliers so they grab onto the coil firmly when you push them on. I would also check the valves clearances just to be sure they are correct. VERY IMPORTANT! I set 'em both to .05mm or .003 in. Here's Brent's video tutorial:
