Since you have a genuine Yamaha, you should be able to find a good service manual that will give you all specs that you can test for the stator and coil. I'd also check the air gap between the reluctor (raised bit on the flywheel) and pickup, just cause it's a quick check and it does cause issues from time to time. Should be around .010".
If you really think it feels like an air leak, I'd suggest a leak down test. You can make one cheap, links in the Tech Library, and they find things you may never find otherwise.

I downloaded the service manual right after buying the scooter, haven't gotten around to checking the stator and coil yet. One thing you said is something I didn't know about, the air gap between the reluctor and pick up. It's something I've seen on scooters, coming from mopeds it's not something I thought of to look at. I remember something in your build threads about it, maybe from the 90cc one. Either way I'll read up on that tonight. I appreciate your replies. Thanks for the suggestions and info.

Really nothing to checking it. You're just making sure the pickup is close enough.

If it has a filter in the tank, it could be patially blocked usually towards the bottom. It will restrict fuel flow at high rpm. My little honda had that issue.

Look at your engine case ground, it's easily forgotten when taking off CVT cover or the wire might be broken. Look for it, my wiring came in fire because of this little ground. My jog was having the same symptoms as yours. The battery ground and engine case ground are near to each other on the wiring harness and can be inverted.
