They were popular some years ago, everybody wanted them for their older model Zuma. For the vertical engine, there was no need to mill the crankcase, I don't know for the minarelli horizontal. I heard it wasn't obligatory. Talking about performance, it is better to take an Athena Racing (or Evo) 70cc than the 80cc, as the 80cc is only a stroker version of the basic cylinder. The racing is more powerful and you don't need to change the crankshaft. The Racing and the Basic 70cc were the same as Stage6 Sport Pro and Racing MKI, they are good quality and lasts if you do the ring changes in time.
On the other side, it's possible to use the athena stroker crankshaft for a 50cc to 90cc/100cc conversion as they're 12mm pin and full circle, 43mm stroke. If you don't have to mill to fit the crankshaft, that means it's a big part of work you don't have to do when fitting a 54mm cylinder on a 50cc engine case.
EDIT: And yes it's the biggest bore you can get on a 50cc engine case without milling the crankcase (if the cranksaft are like the older model zuma).

So I have a Minarelli vertical style engine made by Smolik performance. It's 47.6 bore × 43mm stroke. You mean there is a larger bore cyl/piston kit out there for this?
