I got a really nice Yamaha dt 175 given to me. They put a new coil on it and it ran till they shut it off and won't run (bad coil they said). Its got compression and fuel but spark is really weak and intermittent. Battery is gone and wires cut and taped. I have weak spark and coil tests fine how do you test a cdi and does anyone know if these have an advance curve in them or can I wire in a cheep scooter replacement? I would start out by checking all connections and verify that all grounds are secure. Also check the air gap between the flywheel and pickup. I think you need a special tester for a CDI, so most swap in a known good one.

Thanks they swore it was burning up coils, they went through 3 put it on run tank of fuel and it wouldn't start. I think it was just a coincidence. I have weak spark to start and goes to none the more I kick it. I'll check the air gap will running with no battery kill a cdi? And can cdi get weak and intermittent?

Running with no battery should have no bearing on CDI life, for any AC CDI. DC it just wouldn't run.
I used to think CDIs either worked or not, but I did have one start giving me problems, but still running, a little while ago.

If you are not installing an oem part, you might want to consider it. Look up the correct P/N and try that first. Coils can be funny sometimes with different resistance characteristics. Also the wrong plug can cause resistance problems causing excess heat to build in the coil.
