I agreed to repair a '08 Tomos Streetmate Moped (A55 engine) that had a BBK on it that failed. I think it's kinda cool as far as mopeds go. It had a 64cc kit but I'm replacing it with a stock top end. I talked the guy into doing pre-mix so I'll be removing the oil tank and injector pump. The one thing that bothers me is I don't know the standard jet size so I don't know if it's been jetted or not. It has a Uni pod filter. I think maybe they fitted the BBK and the filter but didn't jet it and that's why it seized up. I'll have to read some moped forums.Waiting on parts from Steve's in New jersey. It's been a week and still no tracking number. Anyway I thought a few of you may find it interesting. The red plastic thing that looks like a fuel tank is really just a cargo bin. The oil pump is pretty small and runs directly off the end of the crankshaft. No gear. The carb is also very small. Trash

That's actually really cool looking for a ped, and those are some serious cooling fins!

I think the two speed auto transmissions are cool on these things. These things have a lot of hop up mods available. Getting to the motor is not such a hassle either. Hope the customer will be happy with the stock displacement. Piston port induction I see.

I'm looking forward to that first test ride.

So I never really ended this topic before. I fixed the engine and gave it back to the customer after removing the oil pump and showing them how to pre-mix the gas/oil. It is actually kinda quick but it wind out too soon. I think it needs a smaller rear sprocket but the big tires make the ride very smooth. Then last week after only a month I got a call from the guy's father saying it quit running and wouldn't start. He said it had spark and compression and he had shot fuel into the throat and still nothing. I told him to clean the carb and that didn't help so he brings it to my house today and after I tore it apart it turns out the piston had scoring and the rings were fused to the piston in a few spots. The compression he felt was very low. After some interrogation by his father (who is an LAPD Lieutenant) his son admitted he had run out of gas and pushed it to a station and rode it on straight gas. That top end was $180 + shipping. So his dad immediately drove a hundred miles round trip and spent $200 for another cylinder/piston/rings/clips/pin/gasket set and brought it to me. I got it all back running again in a few hours and called him up to tell him it was done and he said he's putting a chain lock on it til his son comes up with the money this time. ;D The kid is reluctant to learn how an engine works. I tried to explain the difference between a 2T and a 4T to him and why you can never run it without oil but his eyes kinda glazed over. Anyway, it's not a bad little ped and after some research, I found out that you can BBK them and they'll really scream with the proper jetting/sprocket set-up. You can adjust the spark advance at the stator plate.

I think the Tomos' are cool. If you don't like the way one model looks then you can probably find another model that's eye-pleasing.... they make so many. The simplest, the regular Sprint weighs only 106 lbs.

Yeah they are pretty nice. This one is called the Streetmate R. I noticed today that the down tube of the frame is about 4 or 5 inches in diameter and doubles as the fuel tank. The fill spout is under the seat.

A friend (Bob who used to post here) had a Tomos with a BBK, pipe, and drilled main jet. It did nearly 50MPH. Might have had a different sprocket, I can't remember. I like the way that one looks better than his though. There are pics and a sound clip of it posted here somewhere. EDIT :

I cant remember the exact model, but i have a Tomos scooter now. My Pop picked it up for me a while back. I didnt have room in the truck to bring it home on the last trip down so i gotta go back and get it soon. Its not like the one you worked on Fox, and lot quite like Bobs. This one is chain drive and looks like Bobs but has no peddles....
