Considering just the TD, I'd opt for a good variator first. Cost for a decent one is pretty low and aftermarket variators work well to improve acceleration and top speed if the power is there to allow it. As far as Malossi TD vs anything else, I would imagine one straight groove TD is about as good as the next. Angles may be slightly different, but I think the Malossi is pretty pricey. If you were going with a whole overrange kit, in that case I really like the OR Malossi TD. The whole pulley is a larger diameter and works perfectly with the rest of the OR kit to keep revs very steady.
Here's a look at a Hoca straight groove TD and what it did on my 49cc project. The Hoca only comes with a whole pulley, so it's overpriced in that respect as well. I know there are some out there that include just the TD at a pretty low cost.

I have a stage6 variator.... I believe there's two different angles on the the malossi td, 36 degrees and 38. Is one more for acceleration and one for top speed?

You should be able to get the same speed with either set of grooves. The different angles change how it shifts and keeps the revs up.
