My BBK arrived today! It came with the below copper head gasket, there is a ridge on it. Should this go up towards the head or does it really matter? The head surface is flat and no corresponding ridge in it. Also should I be using copper spray on this? The base gasket is a paper type, should I use copper spray on that also or just some sort of silicone based gasket sealant paste.

Nevermind! I just pulled the old one off and it had the same style copper gasket and the ridge goes up facing the head.

I like to use copper spray on the head gasket. Not really necessary though.
I know some use copper spray on the base gasket. The toughest sealant is a case sealant, like ThreeBond for example. The problem is it's also the toughest to remove and clean up. Permatex Ultra Grey may be a little easier to work with and is also a good case sealant. I've used Permatex Ultra Black RTV as well. They should seal with just the gasket, but unless I know it's coming apart soon for some reason, I prefer to add "insurance".

I like to use some copper gasket on my base and head gaskets. Just in case.

The last engine i built i had a small base leak in mock up without any sealant. I use it on the base, head (depending on style?), and intake area.
The one thing ive seen allot of with any kind of sealant is overuse. Ive taken a couple engines apart with so much permatex around the base of the cylinder it was literally blocking half the transfer tunnels.
