I know you've been around for a bit, but anyway. ;D I've seen 10,000RPM or just above max on mine. High 9,000s regularly. But then it did die at 2,000 miles. lol This is from stepthrutuner : "Word of caution. These things break piston rings when rpms get in the mid elevens or so(and a little birdie didn't tell me). So watch that tach going downhills. Another reason for upgearing." The stock stroke is 41.4mm.

Thanks for the gauge info. I have also found out that a #85 jet will idle but , with a load put on the 50cc it is too much fuel. I haven't decided to fiddle around with the airbox yet. I Thought about putting both a hotter coil and CDI along with an iridium spark plug. A good balance between dependability and performance is what I am shooting for. My downfall is I haven't found the ideal combination. I love to tinker with my scooter! its not too much gas, its not enough air. ditch the stock airbox and go with a uni or some other free flowing airfilter. I am running a #88 main with a pod filter and mine runs great.

Glad I found this thread. I have 1 week on my 82 cc kit (or somewhere around there.) And I,ve been reading alot. What I'm thinking is this scooter was prett poorly maintained before I got it. I've got about 35 miles on it.
What oil should I be running.
What can I tweak to try and not crap out in 2000 miles.
Overall I'm impressed with it. Havnt gps'd it yet but the needles buried on the 40 mph speedo on the slight downhills.
Something I'm interested in is getting a better fan on. It I think that may keep it cooler. Also I've heard mention of oil coolers.
Thanks.

For longevity's sake, I'd run synthetic oil. Keeping the revs down would help. I was operating at a high RPM most of the time for max performance. Improved cooling definitely wouldn't be a bad idea. I know there are oil cooler kits out there, but I'm not sure how effective they are.

Sorry for jacking the thread. Just got off the phone with my brother in law and apparently I'm supposed to be using real oil for the break in. Comments on this?

Yeah, sorry I didn't mention that. For break in, most use conventional oil. 10W40 is pretty popular for these. Any major brand of synthetic oil is OK. Some swear by Royal Purple, Mobil 1, AMSOil, etc... I think any of them are good.

The first impression I get after riding a few miles on a fresh 50mm install is a lot more vibration in the handlebars and seat compared to the 47mm, the power is there but I dont know that its going to be THAT much more than my factory 72cc was and there is certainly more vibration going on. I spent many years in the automotive service industry and my first instinct on this 50mm is that its not gonna last.

Went for about a 25 mile ride and the power sure is nice! Its strong all the way through the rpms to top speed. No issues. Plug looks just about perfect. Easily keeps up with 45mph traffic at 3/4 throttle. I am 165 lbs so that helps. Happy so far! We shall see how long it lasts.

I hope it lasts you a long time. Even if it doesn't, I hope you can see good speeds and enjoy the rides you get.

I rode into the city in places where the speed limit is posted 45. I was doing an indicated 55 on my speedo and passing cars and getting crazy looks. Mission Accomplished Took a nice down hill run and buried it past the 60 mark to where the needle was pointed at the turn signal lamp. I backed off then, still breaking in but I don't think it had much left. Before the 83 it would not quite get to the 60 mark on that hill. I need a GPS or a bike speedo to see what my speed really is. I notice that when the bike was stock with no mods at all I had the throttle pinned all the time pretty much. And this bike was a factory 72cc so I can imagine what a 50cc would be like. Once I jetted up and installed the other stuff I hit WOT sometimes but not always. Now with the 83 BBK I rarely hit WOT. Some porting/polishing and match porting the intake and exhaust would help a great deal but thats not the goal here. The goal is to use bolt on parts, drive respectable and see how long it lasts. I can see how longevity could be an issue if you rode an 83 WOT all the time and/or are heavier than 220lbs. If you are a lighter person and ride easy, I think they can last a good while. I hope I am right.

Turns out my gut instinct was right Piston lasted 400 miles (i was wrong when I said 175 earlier guess I added that up wrong) Piston appears like it was making just a tiny bit of contact with the head. Head wasnt worked enough. I have a Hoca piston coming and am going to use 2 base gaskets this time. If it blows again im gonna go back to 72cc, it ran stellar and thats what came stock in the bike anyway. If you are gonna do this get a good quality kit like Hoca, Polini, Airsal, NCY or Nakaru Mine was a cheap chinese kit from scrappys. I bought the kit from a guy on craigslist. He said he just wasnt interested in doing scooter engine work anymore, gee i wonder why. I bet this same thing happened to another kit he bought just like this one. Oh well, You get what you pay for.

I have Scrappy's kit and Big Valve Head, 3000 miles and counting. My rpm's only hit mid 7's too. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
