I can't get the damned thing back on after painting. I've been relying on the electric starter for the last few weeks. Starting to think that might not be a good idea. Any tricks I should know of?

Put your head (think) to it. A hollow shaft nut driver can be helpful to move the spring. Also possibly vise grips to keep the fixed end from jumping off (clamp the vice grips not on the spring but on the metal just above where the end of the spring is 'kept'.

I was trying to do it backwards. The reason being, the gear is in the way. How do I twist the spring, while the gear is top of the spring?? If I don't have the gear on top of the spring, it doesn't stay around the "spool" part.
I'll try that method tomorrow. Thanks for the tip.

I've had sucess using the kick lever to wind it but it's still a two person job. I've seen some people use a coat hanger to make a tool to hook the end of the spring but I haven't tried it yet.

I got it, thanks Used stepthru's advice. Worked like a charm (after about 20 minutes of trying and cursing it)!
