hi im hoping for a little advise i have a 2012 taotao atm-50 it runs pretty well but im hoping to get a little more out of it. i put a performance header pipe and glass pac muffler on it and 5gr variator weights should i rejet carb it has a 79 main and 32 pilot in it from factory. the MAIN thing i want out of it is a little better uphill performance. Any suggestions would be great. I also replaced factory CDI with hi pro one and it will not start using electric but will start rite up with 1 kick???WTH!!

:welcome: to the forum!
You should tune the carb after exhaust work. A lot of them like around 82-85 main jet stock. You will probably be OK with the pilot jet as-is and idle mixture adjustment.
Does the electric starter turn over? Hear a click? More detail would be helpful.
I would consider a big bore kit beyond the mods you have now. I feel they are the best bang for the buck, and they provide much better hill climbing power. You will prob need to upjet farther with a big bore.

Did it crank over ok before the CDI? sometimes the timing is so advanced on performance cdi's it makes the engine hard to crank over.

These scooters are not like fuel injected cars, it has a pumper carb so sometimes you have to give it one shot of gas, maybe 2 when cranking over.

Also the biggest gain out of any one item i have found is the air filter. Switching to a pod filter like UNI brand and jetting properly (@85 main on a 44mm 63cc taotao) is the best thing you can do. Also, a windshield helps alot. I have windshields on all 4 of my scooters.

I get what you mean about the giving a bump or two of throttle but i never had to do that with factory CDI. thats the thing that has got me stumped. Also I talked to the moped/scooter store mech. and he told me a BBK wont help.

I was also thinking of changing my clutch and torque springs to a 1K spring. would i be going wrong by doing that, or should I leave the factory springs in.

If I put a dif. air filter on my bike could i take the fuel "thing" off. Its the "thing" the gas runs through between carb and tank that has the vaccum line from intake manifold on it.

If I put a dif. air filter on my bike could i take the fuel "thing" off. Its the "thing" the gas runs through between carb and tank that has the vaccum line from intake manifold on it. You can do that even without other mods. Follow the vacuum line from the petcock and cap off it's port of origin. I would suggest installing a manual fuel shutoff in it's place though. It will make work to the fuel system much easier in the future and if you ever have a float stick and start overflowing you can stop it. I was also thinking of changing my clutch and torque springs to a 1K spring. would i be going wrong by doing that, or should I leave the factory springs in. The torque/contra spring and the roller weights counteract each other. That's why I usually call it a contra spring, instead of torque spring. Installing a stiffer contra spring will have much the same affect as installing lighter rollers. If you are happy with the 5g rollers, leave the contra spring alone. The clutch springs control the initial engagement of your clutch. When you are at idle, it's the clutch springs keeping the scooter from moving. Their stiffness designates at what RPM centrifugal force can overcome them and allow the clutch to grab so you can begin putting power to the ground and moving. Stiffer springs will raise the RPM at which that happens. So, if you feel it's too sluggish on the initial launch, stiffer clutch springs may help. I talked to the moped/scooter store mech. and he told me a BBK wont help. First time I've ever heard that for someone looking for hill climbing ability or an overall power increase on a 50cc. Ever heard the saying, "there's no replacement for displacement"?

LOL he also said that the 49cc taotao's are secretly 63cc. And as far as the clutch springs go I am a little slow on launch. What springs would you rec. for harder launch?

A BBK will help enormously. Go with a 80cc kit and tell me it doesnt pull you better! I would not use an aftermarket cam with the bbk as the timing gear is usually pressed on wrong and gives you LESS power. Port the head and mill it for more compression you will make good torque. You can also try to slot your timing pickup and slide it to the left for more advance. Pay close attention to detonation/pinging.

If its a 63cc it should have the engine code "1P39QMJ" or whatever the 50cc are. I forget lol but it will have the P in the code

I don't think they've been 44mm bore for a couple of years.
