I think it won't work. the choke body needs to seal the vacuum. The top one seals on the bottom of the base. The lower one seals inside the carburetor body with an "O" ring in that first groove, on the side. Can you convert yours to cable type?

Yeah, the more I think about it, it would require some extra work (fabricating some kind of adapter that who knows if it would seal 100%). I think I'll keep looking for a correct part that I can get shipped to NZ.
I did convert my nonworking choke to a cable operated one, but its not nicely done to be honest...hard to use, etc, and I'd like to go back to an auto choke.
