I do have an easy, quick fix for anyone with an exhaust that is too loud for cops or H.O.A.'s etc.. 1) Drill small pin hole through entire exhaust about 6 inches down from exhaust tip. 2) Get an Industrial size steel wool pad. The big thick ones they use in restaurants not an S.O.S. pad or anything weak, It should look like a giant steel loofah sponge lol! 3) Stuff steel wool down into pipe until it centers up with the drill holes 4)Strip a speaker wire and run it into hole, through steel wool and out of other hole(very tricky, be patient) 5) Twist ends together underneath pipe for esthetics and your done. You have just reduced the noise from your H.P. exhaust by over 40% and your good to go.

wouldn't this basically create a restriction and thus less performance?

I take it you are referring to effects of back pressure... ..and the answer is, Absolutely not. The gains in p.s.i. would be so minimal, it would hardly register on a digital manometer. In some cases it might even improve performance in engines that do not allow the gases to get hot enough before escaping the chamber and exhaust(4 strokes) Thinking it impedes performance, is like thinking a screen door will block the wind. Just won't happen.

Steel wool generally tends to rust quickly. Fiber glass, or rock wool is used more often.

Steel wool generally tends to rust quickly Very true, Thank you for pointing that out

But a screen door does block the wind to some extent. that's why screen doors can get blown open. At idle, there's probably no difference in backpressure, but as you rev to 9-10k, there's a much higher volume of air that gets moved and this is the only place that it would affect performance. If it didn't affect performance, then why do ppl use open exhausts?
However, with such a small engine, the small percentage drop in power probably isn't noticeable at all, and for a 4t, some backpressure increases torque to some extent. Not sure how this would affect a 2t though, since I'd imagine the oil residue gumming up the fibers.
