So I'm a Jack-of-all trades right. I do home repairs and light remodels etc...
Today I'm installing some gutters on a house in a city that will remain anonymous and up pulls an unmarked Crown Victoria with what looks like an undercover cop inside. He gets out with his city logo shirt and his little clipboard and walks up to me stating he's from the City Of ______ Business License Enforcement. I say "oookaaay". He says "do you currently have a ______ business license?" I say "no I don't" He tells me that he needs my drivers license and he'll be right back. I give him my license and start working again. he comes back with a citation that says "Notice of Administrative Penalty" on top. There are three amounts listed. 1st offense-$50, 2nd offense-$250, 3rd offense-$500. He's crossed out the $50 and written in $250 for a first offense.
Okay, so he goes on to explain that it's like a fix-it ticket and all I have to do is apply for a license and pay the license fee within 10 days and they throw out the ticket. I say okay and he gives me the application form. It states that the application fee is $148 and there's a "tax" of $90 so to get a license it's $238 for a year. I call the number on the "Administrative Penalty Notice" (Ticket) and ask them if they can grant me a little more time to pay like three weeks. The girl says that I can pay half now and half in 30 days but there's a $15 "Extension fee" I told her "Forget it!"
I called the lady that hired me and told her that she's going to pay half and she agrees but it still sucks that I have to work for 8 hours to pay the $119.
IT'S LEGALIZED EXTORTION I TELL YOU! THEY ARE TREATING ME AS IF I HAVE A BRICK AND MORTAR BUSINESS IN THEIR CITY. IT'S LIKE GANG-BANGERS TAXING THE DRUG DEALERS FOR DEALING ON THEIR TURF
The truth is that I only work for that one lady once in a while. I never ever work in that city other than that. I guess I should put up some business fliers in their fine city once I get my "license" with my city license number on them.
So tomorrow I pay the $238 and that license better be good for 365 days from tomorrow and not just till Dec 31st. or I'm going to raise hell.
BASTARDS!
