I had this very informative rant going about my Roadrunner and lost my connection when I was posting it This was a previously perfectly fine scooter. Short version, connection to emmition control canister came loose, back fire, sputter die.couple times til destination.pull over fix connection.Thought it was fixed. Ride 10 miles, sputter die at stop light. ( this was last fall ) Fired up, ran, died after it warmed up. Valve adjustment checked lines, air fuel, and replaced any loose clamps replaced carb, parked for winter, tree falls on shed... new shed built, back to problem Try another valve adjustment ( to do this scooter I have to pull all plastics, and move gas tank out of the way, PITA ) pulled emmition control Now before the valve adjustment it fired up, but dies after it warmed up. Now, I got No Spark. Turns over fine. Checked , double, tripple checked wire connections Replaced spark plug, No Spark I replaced the coil, ( intermitent spark? could cause problems described?) No Spark replaced the CDI, No Spark So the next part to check is the compression, and Stator, but what the heck did I do in doing a valve adjustment that could cause the stator to die? Could the backfireing have done damage to "what?" I am Thoughts ,suggestions welcome

Thanks, very frustrating. Just went from a stalling issue to the darn thing won't start I will definately have the plastics off of this baby till problem solved. Good to have a shop again Just figured as long as I have it open I'll try my thumb on the spark plug hole test and settle that question in my stalling issue. Though it could and probably is totally related to the spark, hmmm. I am not getting any voltage to the coil wires, connectors. So I think I have to look at the stator, sigh. Have been going over your "no start" since you started it, thank you for the very clear information. I printed out that manual last year. It's a must have if you own one of these beasties. What kind of damage can a major backfire do? If any.

I haven't seen a backfire hurt a scooter yet, but it's possible. Major exhaust backfires could damage exhaust components and I've heard of them damaging exhaust valves. If your exhaust hasn't blown apart or fell off, you are probably safe.

Thanks. That was what I thought. Engines backfire all the time, in my life I never heard anyone say " Oh :swear: ", it usually gets a good laugh. It would be easier to troubleshoot in cause and effect mode, going to have to follow the wires though. Electrical issues really bite. You need a little smiley getting zapped by lightning ;D

I saw 'em but didn't think they'd be useful. At your request...

 That is perfect thank you :zap: Do you remember that flywheel you couldn't get to move? Well apparently I have one of those. I can see a lot of white crustyness around the flywheel, so I am really wanting to get at the stator and see if it's covered in corrosive gunk. I tried my steering wheel puller and that thing is stuck. I will have to order a proper puller and hope for the best I guess. :zap:

:stumped: Going with a 27mmx1.0 LH puller. I did the thumb test for compression, that was neet Compression was good.

I think the proper puller will get it. I've never had a problem with one that I could get the puller on so far. That one I ran into had stripped threads so I couldn't use a regular puller.

YES! Problem solved ;D Not the flywheel, LOL. I Stared at the thing for awhile, (LOL, Fox that really does work ) and it occured to me that I needed a shop radio , went shopping for a radio, that wasn't the problem but it's nice to have tunes. This morning I thought I'd give the flywheel another go while it was colder, still stuck, but I did check the clearance on the pickup to the reluctor on the flywheel, it was only .07mm. Figured what the heck, udjust that, when I checked the pickup I could see it was actually worn from contact. " scooter heats up, expanded, contact, stalled scooter, no spark?". I sanded the reluctor clean, adjusted the pickup distance to .25mm ( or .010" ), and Fired right up, and kept running. Another case of unrelated issues gumming the trouble shooting proccess. Thanks for that no start guide, made me look beyond the usual suspects.

Glad you got it fixed, and that's what it's there for! ;D

I Stared at the thing for awhile, (LOL, Fox that really does work ) LOL It's funny how that works. In the past when I was lazy and didn't feel like helping/typing I have told people on a few forums to "Go out and just stare at your scooter for a while. You'll figure it out." and a couple of them have came back saying they figured it out.
