Thinking about wrapping my CT70 clone header & pipes in 2" matte black heat tape. It looks good (to my eye), and I think it may work better than the thin steel heat shields, which look cheap and don't work in any event (melted a big spot on the side vent of my riding boots).
People have warned about rusting under the tape, but I think if I use the two-phase system that gets painted with a preservative chemical it should be fine. This is not a bike for two-up orriding in the rain anyhow.
Anyone wrapped their pipes?

I've only wrapped exhaust parts on my turbo 'stang. I used Thermo Tec's wrap and coating. I hated it and took it off. If you work on it much it frays and looks ugly before long. It should work to some degree for your purposes. I could change spark plugs a few minutes sooner after a run when I was using the Thermo-Tec. I still couldn't touch my headers, but it helped. I made a heat shield out of thin aluminum for one of my midbikes and it worked pretty well. If you try to put a metal heat shield too close to soemthing hot of course it won't work that well. Space the heat shield out if you can.

I was thinking of doing the same until the subject of retaining moisture came up. Ive got a nasty looking pipe and wanted a different look.

I paid $6-700 to redo my headers, downpipe, and crossover pipe. It looks SO much better than the wrap. This is their "Sterling" coating
