I think they sell for $3500 or so new, not sure, so it isn't a bad price. Sweet bike, but what ya gonna do with it? It might be different there, but around here that thing would be trouble for street use. Wouldn't be classified a scooter because of the frame design and transmission. Wouldn't be a motorcycle because of the engine size. Couldn't tag it, couldn't ride it like a scooter or moped. Hopefully your local laws will support it though, because it looks like lots of fun.

Looks fun...
Here's a downside though... If it has to be tagged as a motorcycle, you could get a Ninja 250R for about the same price in that condition and MSRPs aren't far off new either...

This is from the Wisconsin Motorcycle Handbook, So in WI, this would still be a Moped as far as taging it. This is the handbook you study for the motorcycle temps. Check your DMV site.
Moped A moped is any of the following vehicles (excluding a tractor) capable of speeds not more than 30 mph, with 150 lb. rider on a dry, level, hard surface with no wind, a power source as an integral part of the vehicle, and a seat for the operator: A bicycle‑type vehicle with fully operative pedals and an engine certified by the manufacturer at not more than 130 cc. A Type 1 motorcycle with an automatic transmission and engine certified at not more than 50 cc. A Class M license or Motorcycle Instruction Permit (CYCI) is not required to operate these vehicles, however a Class D is and safe riding techniques as outlined in this handbook should be followed. For details on special licensing to operate the above vehicles, contact your local DMV Service Center.

Well... it's capable of way over 30MPH with a 150lb rider, the engine is not an integral part of the frame as it is with a scooter, it's not a bicycle type vehicle with pedals, and it's not an automatic transmission. So to my understanding of their statements this is not a moped in WI.
I don't live there so I dunno what you can really get away with. I know my stripped down scoot has got me pulled over before but they can see that it is a scooter frame that's been modified once they are close and I point it out. Good luck convincing them that a sportbike is a scooter. I'd like to see Ben get this thing, but just know what you are getting into is what I'm saying.

Edit. Also the fuel mileage would probably be better with the Ninja 250. People say their 250 Ninjas can get up to 70-80MPG (depending what model you have). Kitted RS50s are quoted at 35-50MPG from what I've seen. The 250 will do better than 100MPH stock. The 70cc upgraded Aprilias seem to average about 70MPH like Reg said. Last time I looked the 1/4 mile was about 14 seconds for a stock 250 Ninja. Not sure what the RS does, but it ain't that fast. I saw a guy say he did about 17 seconds stock and 12-13 seconds with a 74cc RS50. The thing is, he said he had 3-4 meters to start before he tripped the beams. That's 10-13 feet to get up speed before th etiming equipment starts. Pretty much a useless 1/4 mile figure and if you are backing up from the beams somehow to get a running start I dunno how reliable any info you give out is. EDIT : Just thinking about it, my friend's old RF600R was a 12-13 second bike. I really don't think the RS50 is gonna run like that without one helluva good tuner working on it. Here's my friend's RF600R for comparison... When it's onboard, keep in mind he shoulda went down another gear from where he was... I just don't think the RS50 is gonna be comparable to that with a big bore kit and if it is we are all doing something really really wrong here... Just another note : You can get older used 600s for $2000, although they are usually quite a bit older or with high mileage.

Brent, I've registered a few scooters here, and I don't think they even bother to check that first statement. I think as long as it's a 50cc, it's a scooter. My scooter would do at least 45 when it was stock, and it was still registered as a scooter.
