I;m not expert at this but from what i know of how a petcock works is that fuel should not be continuously be flowing from the tank, through the petcock to the carb and out the drain while the engine is shut of correct? i drained out all my gas this way from my tank.

thats correct. sounds like you have a bad petcock and float valve both.

cost $5 for this petcock I swapped the petrol tank as the other tank had the vac-petcock on the tank
