I'm Daniel, I'm new to the group and hope to learn a great deal, you never can learn too much. Here's my situation, besides not knowing the in's and out's of scooter engines, I need if possible someone to SHOW me how to change the gear oil and the motor oil - I have a 50cc Peace Scooter. It has 69 miles of which I've put 68 of those miles. I love my scooter, it's amazing fun, the helmet on the other hand, is very heavy, finally I'm getting use to it! I like in a small town outside of Braselton, Georgia I have just 4 months ago been diagnosed with bladder cancer, I'm NOT going to mope around feeling sorry for myself nor do I want anyone else to do that either, I want and intend to live however long I have, having fun and enjoying life to the best that I can.
Is there someone close by that can help me LEARN how to change the oil and gear oil? If so please email me directly at danielw4adt@gmail.com I do appreciate any help that can be given!
Daniel

Welcome to the forum Daniel. It is quite a straight forward job to change the oil, You should have no problems.

Thanks Teddy for the links, and now I am a bit more confused, I'm sure that you can clear the mud up a bit. My scooter says use GL-3 gear oil - so by the instructions given in the link, I can use 90 wt gear oil is that correct? And as far as the motor oil, I can use ANY 15W-40 motor oil, correct?

Here's a vid showing both engine and gear oil changes... www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRVO6uRPJ2wYou can use any 15W40 engine oil. It does not have to be a motorcycle oil, because these scooters do not have wet clutches. I use 75W90, but any gear oil close to that will work.

I don't know that thicker oil is a great idea with colder weather coming especially, but others do use 20W50. You can get Shell Rotella T 15W40 pretty cheap at Wal-Mart. I'd prefer synthetic, but I can't get Royal Purple/Mobil 1 for $13/gallon.

Do one or do both? Daniel

If not messing with the "filter", just use the drain plug. If cleaning the screen I do both, but you could prob just do the filter side and tilt the scoot so oil runs that way.

20w50 is thought to be tuff on the plastic oil pump gears. Also the 15w40s are quite good nowadays. Rotella being full of zink protects well. I prefer a synthetic blend at 10w40 for mine.

nobody laugh! I took the plunge got everything ready had my oil had my final had my rags had my improvised oil pan. everything was going to cording to plan the oil drained out perfectly I waited to the last drop then cleaned around the drain plug put the plug back in tighten everything down went around to the other side of the scooter made sure the dipstick remain clean open up the bottle of oil inserted the final pour the oil here's where I took my time making sure I did not overfill everything registered fine I screwed the dipstick back in got on the scooter started the engine..the engine purred with the new oil inside I let the engine run for about 5 minutes checking every few moments for oil leaks none were seen none were to be found I thought damn I did a good job I did this all by myself..of course with the help of you guys of course! the old oil which believe me was very nasty and by the way not even a half a quart of oil was in the engine Thank God only put 60 miles on the engine before I noticed this! as I was saying pouring the nasty boy lol into a disposable container amazed at how dirty it was what was at the bottom of the dirty oil? you guessed it the washer that goes on the bolt plugging the oil.I could not believe it! so here I go again draining the fresh oil into a new container fishing out the washer shaking my head in disgust at my stupidity everything is now done all is complete no leaks I will once again check the oil level in the morning before I go riding! thanks to everybody I am now a professional scooter oil changer!!!!!!
