I picked up a used scooter a couple of weeks ago, its a 2013 Tao Tao 50 with about 1600 mls. So thanks to Brent's videos I was able to jump in and start playing around with some confidence. I am trying to pick which direction to take next. I would like to get the scoot up to 55 cruise speed. I have seen some threads on CDIs and rollers but I would like the most jump in speed without having to do a big bore kit yet. I read a few things on the drive boss being replaced or filed down to get some significant increase in speed.
I'm trying to make a check list of things to try. Any help would be awesome.

For 55MPH a big bore kit is a must. 55MPH cruising, even the big bore prob won't do it. I would say plan a full-on build to do that or see if you can find a two-stroke scooter or even a 150cc GY6. Cruising at that speed, the 150 with a moto license and insurance is the safe/legal way.
If you do want to cruise that fast on a 139QMB, I'd go 52mm big bore with a big valve head and a cam. With the heavier piston and the increased output, it's gonna be tough on the bottom end. For that reason I'd consider an HD crankshaft. Also add a 150cc intake and carb or aftermarket carb 22-24mm and intake with a UNI pod filter. I'd do the pickup mod I showed in the Update 4 vid from Project TaoTao as long as there was no detonation on premium unleaded. Add an aftermarket variator, sliders, and clutch springs and then an upgear and a big pile of cash later you should be topping 50MPH when you get it dialed in. Crusing at 55MPH... I dunno. To cruise at 55MPH regularly, the scoot will need to be capable of 60+ and not many 139QMBs do that.
Myself and others will be glad to watch and help along the way as much as we can, but I'd strongly consider a different platform if you must have 55MPH cruise speeds.

Was not expecting all of that, consider my bubble popped! So realistically what should i expect from a 139QMB. I would still like to mod up the Tao Tao it has been allot of fun so far.

Avg rider should expect 35-40MPH WOT cruise speeds when it's in a decent state of tune. Getting the carb in tune, stiffer clutch springs, and slider weights to tune the variator will usually give good results. Consider the pickup mod I mentioned in my first post. Shortening the drive boss may help with speed. I'd see what it does with what I've listed so far first.

I know that the CDI results were not too impressive from your last update but what do you think of a better filter and exhaust.

Welcome to the forum. Be warned this tuning lark can get addictive, and expensive lol.

I actually thought the pickup mod did well for being free. There is more pull, and the 0-30MPH times reflected that. CDIs helped a little too, but they aren't free and both of the ones I tried hurt starting. Air filter and exhaust should be good for small gains as well. Be sure to get a jet kit so you can retune the carb after they're installed. If you go with one of the fairly cheap eBay pipes, make a bracket to better support it or it may crack since most don't support the weight of the muffler and stress the header pipe. 49ccscoot.proboards.com/thread/5841/ebay-cheap-exhaust-bracket-improvement

I am defiantly going to try the mod you showed in the last update. I was going through some of the other videos and came across one where you shaved down one of the sides of the fan pulley. How did that work out long term.

That was prob a vid for a two-stroke. The fan should have been aluminum instead of steel and looked different than the one you have. I haven't tried this for the 4T. The steel fixed half would be a lot harder to work with and it doesn't have any built in lip to worry about like the 2T did.

So I tried the pick up mod today and it shows some promise but I still have to tune the carb. I ran it a couple of times and the pick up is better but it just drags to get to top speed. I am a big boy but I had my son run it and he has similar results. My top speed was about 22- 25 and his was about 30. So I have quite a ways to go so it is still a work in progress. I am going to try to find a local dealer for the rollers and clutch spring. I have the Tansmission apart and I'm debating weather to grind down the pulley or the drive boss not quite sure if I should bite the bullet.

My vote is leave the drive boss alone for now. I'm 300lb and could cruise over 30MPH stock. There should be more in it just having it in tune. Then again, a drive boss is cheap from PFS so if you don't like it it's not a huge loss.

I agree I'm going to hold off in the drive boss. I will pick up a new CDI along with the carb jets. I would also like to pick up a new coil but I haven't really seen any reviews other than the that was done recently. Are there any respectable brands to look for (scrappy dog, envromoto, or anyone else).

I've had a Bando and an "SS" (from eBay seller daywot) on my 2Ts for years now. They work fine for me and don't miss. I've had a Kitaco coil that I've used off and on on various 2Ts and 4Ts for I guess 8 years now that was for a midbike. Really I think you'd be just fine with a stock coil, but plenty of others say the orange coil works well for them. Everything I see on eBay looks the same as what I see on Scrappy or PFS.

Anyone out there good at diagnosing a no-start when doing a 72cc BBK on a Taotao 50cc scooter?

Don't forget to think about getting that Taotao Paladin 150cc scooter. You need to get a new license, but met a girl with a Buddy 150cc at UCLA and she pays $90.00 per year for insurance, so that's less than I pay living by USC for insurance on my Taotao 50cc. The 150cc will cruise at 55mph, close to 60mph, as the max is 65mph, or 70mph "optimistic". I wish they'd put in regular speedometers stock in these scoots because I like to know actual speed.

I installed a 50mm Hoca big bore kit on my tao tao cy-50, and I see 40-45 mph on flat roads regularly, but I only weigh 165lbs. The free flow exhaust, 20mm carb, and uni filter made a huge difference. Try rejetting your carb and drop your roller weights to 5.5 grams and you will see a big difference stock. Save your money for a big bore kit, and you will be so much happier! The kit makes riding a scooter a totally different experience!
