Is there a wrong way to install a stator

timing could also be off if you shear the woodruff key. Sometimes when tightening the magneto you could shear the key and just have the timing a little off. You should have a look at the key and keyway.

Agree, check the woodruff key. It can fall out unnoticed.

The stator I did use had a different plug, but the correct wires. I swapped the plug from the bad/original stator and it worked fine.
