Hey all!
Bought this a few weeks ago, in pretty bad condition with body filler on two panels, 2 different colours and maxing out at just over 40 km/hr. The pipe was a leo vince muffler welded very badly to the standard headers with a broken exhaust stud to boot. Rollers are flat spotted, spark plug corroded, battery had it and the kick starter jumping splines straight up. Some evidence of a head leak upon disassembly.
Goals
Soft Goal before 'game changing' mods - Factory performance of around 55-60km/hr top speed.
Primary Project Goals
Top speed of around 80-90 km/hr.
STRONG acceleration from 0-50km/hr.
Work Done
-Plastics replaced (from webike.net. Except for top bar pieces, different from Australian 3KJ to Jap 3KJ)
-Spark plug Changed
-Plastics replaced or painted.
-Broken manifold stud removed and replaced
-New gasket kit installed
-Decoked exhaust port which was approx 50% closed over.
-Opened up exhaust outlet on head? to match exhaust gasket and exhaust
-Vertical Minarelli Gianelli pipe modified to replace mongrel setup (Factory header pipe cut and shut onto aftermarket pipe)
-Kick starter replaced with NOS Yamaha part
-Some mad jap air filter replacement - this thing is thick as compared to stock. Should really oil it.
-Rear shock from Karlos
Unfortunately I don't have any pics of the factory exhaust close up, only this one.
The Pic before the mutilation of a perfectly good Gianelli Vertical pipe - But still better then the noisy, underpowered hell of the 'effort' I got the scoot with.
Ugly but it works and it much quieter then an open pipe.
Parts to be fitted or in the mail to be fitted
-Clutch springs and Main Spring (Here but need to modify my 38mm Socket to fit the nut)
-Karlos' 70cc Kit (Waiting on carb 90 deg adapter)
-19mm Dellorto PHGB clone (waiting on 90 deg throttle adapter from Treats)
-Shit tonne of jets - Here or nearly here from Treats to suit 5mm - Not stock carb.
-Variator rollers - Waiting on Postman
-Wirus Win Exhaust - Eagerly waiting on postman. This thing looks insane, lets hope there's an element of expansion chamber to it.
-Knobby style rear tyre
-Hoca rear clutch assembly (I think, can't remember which brand I bought)
Wish List
-Front shocks (Rear has just shown how bad the fronts are)
-Maybe reeds
-All the airmail to get here FFS.
Acceleration noticeably improved with the modified vertical exhaust despite a 3mm reduction on pipe OD. Top speed is now approx 50km/hr on the flat, 60+ down larger declines.
I believe the limiting factor is the factory variator at this stage, the engine appears to be performing as well as it could without a new set of rings. I think I will have to move to a colder plug as I'm seeing orange on the Iridium I've got on there, with 3 turns out on the mixture screw. Will raise the needle a notch tomorrow, fresh plug and retest. I live at sea level with temperatures of 35-45 degrees celsius and relatively low humidity.
If I had jets for this thing I'd use them but only ordered dellorto jets to suit the carb I can't use until I get the 90deg adapter.
Question.....how long is a Yamaha jog throttle cable? Because otherwise I'll just mutilate the old one with a grinder and use the adapter when it gets here.
That's all I got. Next update when I have time and more mods under it. Soft goal may not be achieved in my opinion without spending money on new stock rings.
