Hello,
Been lurking for a few months and will be getting a little Taotao 49cc Type B with my tax returns. Getting it primarily for a run about in the city that gets insane MPGs. Right now I drive a 1980 AMC Spirit with a 406 CI Chevy small bloc. The 10 MPG I get in that is just not cool on the wallet. Chances are zero that it will stay stock and I will be looking for top speed improvements to keep up with the traffic of the area. Unfortunately the "main street" here is a 3 lane each way highway with 50 - 55 speed limits. Not looking to run 50 but a 45 top speed would be nice.

Welcome! You might want to consider a used 2t. Stock will get you near 45 and a pipe and variator +/-55. Less work and money to get the top speed.

Local used are slim pickings. Most are 150cc or the modern style that I don't dig. I've only seen one 2 stroke and it was in really bad shape.

Used are hit or miss anywhere, add a used retro 2t and you might be in for a wait or drive. Still think it'd be worth it. That's just me though. I like 2t's obviously. When the opportunity comes around the wife will have a retro 2t.

Welcome to the madness lol. I love 2t bikes. 40 to 45 mph is pretty easy with a 2t. I've road some 4t bikes and they aren't as fast but they are fun. Dad has a yamaha c3 that I love he gets 120 mpg and it will almost stay with my 2t Zuma and runs with my stock Eton beemer. A used vino or c3 would be good if you could find a deal. My sister has a beat to death tao that I think is ok. It runs good but is bent up lol. Scooters are great for running around but you will find you will use any excuse to go for a ride. Post a pic of that amc don't see many of them any more they were cool cars

Its 80s red neck chic with the side pipes and chrome fuel pressure gauge on the hood. When I got it it had a worn out chevy 305 and a very over built th350 plus a Ford 8.8 rear with 4.56 gears. It was some guys bracket racer. I blew the 305 and put in a 406 with 2004r 4 speed automatic to gain some mpg on the highway. Runs high 10s in the 1/4 best of 10.8 @ 131 mph. Tire in the rear are 315 55 15. Its a lot o fun but with my lady using the car to drive to VA for work every day I need something to fill the spot. Got spoiled driving a new Nissan every day.

Nice AMC. A big bore kit accompanied by carb and CVT tuning would be the best start. 47mm kits are most likely to last. 50+mm kits can deliver more power, but they are known to kill bottom ends. The speed limit for scoots is 30MPH in MD so be aware of that when cruising. So far I haven't had an issue out here in the country, but they pay more attention since new laws that came around somewhat recently.

Being able to use two wheels with out the cost of getting a motorcycle license is a big plus. From what I gathered reading to get top end I would need to regear but to do that I need to increase power and the easy way to do that is 80cc. Also what kind of gains can you get from a taller tire on the back? I'm not too worried about burning up motors as it looks like a swap is a few hour job. My first buy will be a spare motor and I'll mod that and learn about the engine. I'm kinda use to blowing motors and having spares ready.

The taller tire doesn't amount to much. Makes a small difference, but you can't really fit anything huge on the back. I went from a 16.5" tall tire to an 18.5" tall tire with some work and I think I got a couple MPH out of it. If you want to decrease the probability of blowing motors, consider a better crankshaft like the Naraku HD or maybe a new stock crank from a Kymco that uses these engines. If you ride a lot the motor swaps may be an issue. We're talking about failures as quickly as 500-2000 miles in some cases with stock Chinese cranks and 50mm+ bores. What is called an 80cc can be confusing BTW. Some call a 47mm bore (72cc) an 80cc. Some call a 50mm bore (81cc) an 80cc and some call the 50mm bore 100cc.

Would it better to just build an aftermarket motor then to buy a stock one and rebuild it? If the cranks are crap I might as well start with a good one, no?
I've seen 100cc motors complete for $400 and pricing the max performance parts at $600 roughly. Granted the parts should yield better power over the crate engine.

Starting with a good crank sounds like the best plan to me. If you try to have a stock bottom end to swap the rest onto then there's the chance you mess up more parts when the bottom goes. Plus even though you're capable of it, most don't have a desire to constantly swap out engines.
