I picked up a couple Iridium plugs this morning that I ordered from Advance Auto. I always have to take the little cap off before the plug wire will fit on the end of the plug. Every scooter I've ever had was like that. Well when I tried to take these caps off, the damn things broke from the inside. What am I doing wrong? This is the exact Iridium plug that I cross referenced with the NGK that was already in it so I don't understand. I've had a hard time getting those caps off before but never to the point that they would break. in case the image doesn't show up, here is a direct link to the pic i622.photobucket.com/albums/tt310/silverspar1/BrokenPlugs.jpg

Dang, now i wish i would posted about the one i broke a few months back. Some of the iridiums have caps that dont come off. I broke one like you did. In your case you could switch plug boots to a style that excepts the plug with the cap on.
BTW- What are you using a long shank plug on? The one i broke was for my sled.

I broke one, but it broke off right at the tip. That's 1 of probably 40 or more. I always use BR7HIX, BR8HIX, or BR9HIX or their standard NGK counterparts at times. Never used the long shank plugs, so maybe it's something with just them.

The ones I broke were BR9EIX I think. I didn't pay enough attention to know that there were long and short shank. The NGK that was already in it was a long one so I just cross referenced it by that. I always used BR8HIX in the Minarelli engine. This engine is a Kymco design based on the Honda Dio.

ok yeah the BR9EIX is the same one my L/C 400cc sled uses. For some reason NGK has a "solid" tip on those. I broke one the same way. You use pliars or channel locks? Sucks you broke 2 plugs man. I would just switch boots if you want to run the Iridium, they just screw on, you can get one for an 86 Polaris 400 snowmobile, i know it will work for ya...

So would it matter if I used the short shank Iridium???

You will loose a bit of compression with the short shank one but it should run fine with one. The BB kit i have calls for a long but i had spark knock with it so i switched to the short. Just remember that the spark plug threads in the head will fill up with carbon quick so if you ever put the long shank back in you some anti seize or some penetrating lube on the plug threads and be easy on it putting it back in.

Get this, I went yo my local Honda dealer to see if they had a long shank iridium plug that would work. They did and what doesn't make sense is that it is a BR9EIX. On this one the cap came off. Same # but different.
