Just wondering. I've noticed some gy6 scooter manuals call for 10w40 or 15w40 engine oil in the rear end, while others call for 80w90 gear oil.
Ive not had the rear end apart on these, I know gear oil works a bit differently. And i figure on a technical side, it could treat gaskets differently; the gaskets on my rear end look to be the same gasket material as my engine up front.
Is anyone here running motor oil in the final drive here?

No way. Your scoot specs says 90 weight as well.

Gear oil and engine oil viscosity ratings are not the same. 10W40 motor oil is actually similar to 75W90 gear oil. I stick with gear oil. I can't tell you exactly what the differences are, but I would assume it has properties specifically intended for use in a gear box. I sure hope they didn't make it smell like mouse pee just for giggles.

Remember that these manual are barely legible and full of translation errors.

I would stick with the gear oil also. In a real pinch I would probably use ATF before motor oil. ATF would have a closer additive package than motor oil.

The owners manual for my DongFang says to use 10W40 in the rear end. A motorcycle mechanic told me to use 75W90 gear oil.

My DungFang owners misinterpretation says use SAE 10W40 for everything except where it says to use the same as the engine oil which says 10W40 4T. That does not necessarily mean it is right... It will just get it through the 30mile/30day warranty period. -LOL

I use 90w. It has better extreme pressure characteristics than 10w40 or anything else does. you can get higher viscosity gear oil than that. somewhere I seen 90w140. not sure what you would use that for.

The stuff smells of rotten Onions and is literally as thick as Black-strap Molasses. It clings well though..cause they gotta heat the gear boxes to drain it all out when they check for metal shavings and signs of wear. I'd never try it in a Scooter cause the stuff probably turns into Grease at 32 degrees or less..

I tore up a seal in the gearbox on my snowblower this winter I've been using Lucas synthetic gear oil. Refilling before I cleaned the driveway and it flowed ok at 5°f. I'm going to use it in my scooter gearboxes

Just looked at the jug high performance 80w90 guess it's not synthetic but it has climbing additives in it

Most require GL5 ( gear lube ) which is 80w90 . Now my Echarm calls for 15w40 just like in the engine . I also used Rotella as it is tougher since it is made for diesel engines . Change it every 1,000 miles or less . Depending on the clearances as to what viscosity would work best . Many new cars use 10w30 or 5w20 engine oil where the German cars use 20w50 .
I switched to Castrol Synblend since dino oil can leave a film and synthetic is slicker and can lower operating temps .
Try to get a sample out of the gearbox as GL has a stink to it compared to oil . You might be able to use straight 50 weigh engine oil if yours requires engine oil instead of gear lube . I know Chevy S10s and Cavaliers used 10w40 in the manual trans which was odd to me almost all others use GL5.
I built a racing Honda CR125 and I used Ford ATF in the tranny since it has a wet clutch . I also put in clutch springs for a 250cc so it would have more bite . I would told the Ford ATF work better and it seemed to do good as I did not have any tranny problems .
For GL5 I would get Mobil1 synthetic or Bel Rays Gear Saver oil .
