What are the differences between an open air filter and an airbox type air filter? I know it's louder with an open filter but what about performance?

The gain is usually noise. I quit using pod filters when I realized I was getting the same results with stock airboxes. Even on larger carbs a stock air box with the snorkel removed will work. Don't remove the snorkel when using a stock carb though, because then you're just causing yourself more jetting and tuning issues than you need.

And how can I measure my carb size if my caliper doesn't fit in there

Is it bad if there's oil in my airbox?

Use something you can get in there and measure it. A piece of solder bent maybe.

I don't think so. Most say a minimum 17mm and a 19 is preferred.
