I just went to renew my DL and the girl at the counter asks me if I' ever had a license in Washington state. I said yeah. She said that an unresolved ticket from 22 years ago came up in the computer and that I could possibly get a hold on my license here in California until I take care of it.
Isn't there a statute of limitations on traffic tickets for crying out loud?

Not if there is money involved apparently, hope there's no interest...

The part that strikes me as odd is... why now? I guess it must be that green stuff Goosey mentioned.

I was just thinking about computers 22 years ago, they must have people going through all the old files and putting it all in the system, so as it gets caught up there will be even more of that kind of thing.

I called and asked someone there at the DMV a few more questions and apparently all the states computers will soon be talking to each other due to some new federal statute requiring it. I have no money to speak of so if they want to hold my license I'll ask for community service or I'll make a minimum payment each month.

I suppose you can thank The Department of Homeland Security or Patriot Act for that.

Sorry to hear about your problem. I agree the statute of limitations you would think had expired. I am normally anti big government, but I think the tying of states computer system could be a good thing if it takes individuals rights into consideration. It is a big can of worms though.

UPDATE: I got my new license in the mail last week so I guess I'm in the clear.
