My Bosslady has been riding for as long as I've been alive. Her big advice is you dress for the crash, not the ride.

Laid it down at around thirty. He was so embarrassed he wrecked he didn't even admit to me he was hurt or the handlebars were wonky until we got home. He could have bloody wrecked again due to the handlebars being loose! Yeah, my daughter's handlebars are a bit loose as well. Just noticed it the other day. I was gonna tear it open and re-tighten it myself, but I told her I think just to be on the safe side, were gonna take it into SS Collision and Cycleworks here in Spencer and have them take a good look at it instead. I'd rather she ride safe then be sorry, so she is not allowed to use her scooter till the pro's give it the A-OK. I'm driving it up there tomorrow, which might not be the smartest thing, but I'd rather I wipe out then she does.

I got this new little 50cc scooter last week, and my parents think that I'm going to end up crashing and killing myself one day. Now that I think about it I'm convinced that they're right. So I'm asking you, how do you guys ride safely? Is there anything that you can do to make a scooter almost as safe as a car? Any tips on the subject would be appreciated
Only way to be (relatively) safe is to put your scoot in your bedroom, and you stay in there with it... heh.
Lots of great suggestions and info from these youts!
Make sure you practice THRESHOLD BRAKING. Using of the front and rear brakes until to the limit of brake lock-up. You have to use them hard and fast (uh huh huh) in all situations, especially in panic EMERGENCY situations. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, until you know your tire's adhesion limits at all surface situations. Most accidents happen at INTERSECTIONS, so be more aware. Constantly check your mirrors, and your surrounding, and you will be good to go!
Also, riding your scoot like a bicycle will help too. Not speed wise, but being careful of where and how you ride.

this is an old thread but i am going to comment anyway.. there are MSF classes all over the country to get your motorcycle endorsement.... in the class i did they only had 125's and 250 motorcycles. they teach you the rules you need to know as well as teaching you on their motorcycles basic safety practices, even if you are only planning on getting a scooter and not a motorcycle, the class and road hours that they provide will have you starting out safer than anyone with a license to drive a car who just buys a scooter and doesnt know that there are different practices for 2 wheeled vehicles. and as a bonus you will get a motorcycle endorsement added to your license so that if you decide you feel comfortable enough to get a scooter over 49cc's there is nothing to stop you

It's just 50 cc if you crash you'll just get some scratches maybe a broken bone but highly unlikely, so don't be scared you'll be fine and if you don't do anything stupid you won't crash I've almost crashed 5 times but I've never have, and i have a bad front tire and very strong front disc brakes, and if i press the brakes too hard ill run in what ever I'm braking so i don't run into but hey I'm just fine I'm sure that I'll crash one day if I'm not paying attention to the road and the environment or someone isn't paying attention and runs into me

One guy hit a dog that ran out in front of him and went over the bars and broke his neck at 40 mph. Another got hit by a drunk driver driving an SUV and, she had no idea she had even hit and ran over the guy much less killed him. Other were wrecks with scooter vs. car and the scoots lost. These are just the ones I remember hearing about, there indeed may be more...I don't own a TV and do not get the newspaper. This might not be any big deal in a much larger city but, it makes me want to watch my ass as much as I possibly can when riding...and ALWAYS wear all of the safety equipment I can afford. Bill

You always have to watch your surroundings. Not only in front of you, but to the rear, the sides, everywhere. At all times.
When coming up on an intersection, even if there are no cars, i'll look left/right down the road and keep two fingers on the brakes.
Hope for the best but prepare for the worst.
edit: there are a lot of videos on youtube - "How not to drive in 20??" watch'em. You can see what's gonna happen a sec or two before it happens. Russia is the best.

If you need convincing to wear your gear all the time just Google 'roadrash queen' and read Brittany Morrow's story. Granted, she crashed going faster than most scooters will go but still applies.

... using this logic, no pedestrian or bicyclist need ever worry about getting anything more than a little boo-boo on his finger.

This is a concern with all new riders , I say gear up ride like your on a scooter that is under powered and be safe ! Enjoy the ride smell the fresh air above all be aware of your surroundings in traffic and go for it ! O one more thing a tip when in traffic at a light stopped watch your rear view mirrors cause people will pull up on you close and some will damn there hit you if your not watching avoid the contact at all cost the car wins 99.9999% of the time lol Ride on dude Ride on

He'd been riding it a couple months maybe. Pickup hit him from behind, ran him over. Paralyzed from neck down.

I know this is an old thread, but I’ll add my 2 cents.
Gear up as much as you can. -full face helmet -motorcycle jacket -long pants -sturdy shoes -riding gloves
Practice counter steering(at speed 10+mph) Push left to go right, push right to go left. Sounds weird, but it will increase your lean pitch and tighten your radius.
Always assume nobody is aware of you. There is stupid, everywhere. Make your scooter as loud (auditory and visually) as possible. Practice braking HARD. Perfect your circles, u-turns and figure 8’s Dont keep your hands on the brakes at a light. Be prepared to haul a*s if a car doesn’t stop. Invest in a LED brake light strobe bulb (5 flashes and then steady)
ALWAYS check your mirrors. Stopped and moving. NEVER, ever, EVER, stop at an intersection directly behind a car, Always divert to the left or right side of the lanes. Never go right around a car on the shoulder. NEVER.
If a collision is unavoidable, DROP THE BIKE and bail. You can buy another bike, you can’t buy another life.
Ride like a cop is behind you all the time.
Don’t wear fkn flip flops.
Bonus: Add on some funky decals to your bike. (Weird, right?) some will notice the decals and that sticks in their mind for a brief time. and they will avoid you or give you space. Psychology. I put the decal D.I.L.L.I.G.A.F on the back, had a lot of people ask me what that means at intersections.
