I second the good idea to wear an orange construction workers vest especially during the day. It is actually more dangerous to ride a 50cc scooter in the daytime as far as people not seeing you. At night they will notice the lights of the scooter and it is more visible.
Braking gast is a skill that should be learned and mastered in a parking lot, not out on the OPEN ROAD. I think everyone should take the Motorcycle Safety Class (they have some cheap groupons for it and its worth every penny).
But if someone chooses to skip the class then it is up to them to set up some orange cones at a Church parking lot and practice emergency braking drills. You should be able to come to a dead stop from 35 mph down to zero in a quick and efficient manner. Also practice your swerving skills in same parking lot, dont wait until you are on the OPEN ROAD to practice because if you screw up on the OPEN ROAD you will be dead compared to making a mistake in the Church parking lot where the worst thing will be that you do down, scratch up your scoot but you will be able to get up pretty soon and do more drills.
Most 2 wheel riders that are seriously injured where Squids and speeders that where hot-dogging around and driving in an irresponsible manner. Gear is important too at the bare minimum a full face helmet and gloves. And wearing full armor such as a jacket and motorcycle pants and boots is probably a smart idea for your first 6 months and will make your parents fell more at ease. So I say full armor + an orange vest.
When you see an aggressive driver coming up then get the HELL out of his way ASAP, get over to another lane. These Car Squids are the ones mostly crashing into bikes because they are speeding and driving recklessly. Think ahead, look ahead and drive as if each cager is out to run you over.
Its kind of like boxing, they best way to avoid a punch is to "not be there" when the punch lands. Bob and weave, duck and roll and its the same when scooting around. Stay out of a cager's blind spot and try to temper the level of your traffic infractions.
Im talking about things like not stopping completely at stop signs, lane splitting, lane filtering and disregarding the 15 mph limit at school zones. many of us flaunt and disregard these rules on a daily basis, feeling like our 50cc scooter gives us exalted privileges. If you engage in these traffic infractions on a daily basis you will develop a "counterfeit confidence" and begin to break traffic laws on the DAILY and the more times that you break traffic laws the more likely your odds of getting into a crash so you are better off not to do it at all. But if you choose to do so anyway at least temper down your behavior and be more reasonable about the amount of traffic infractions you pile up.
And DO NOT run that yellow light when you see cars queued up to make a left turn in front of you. When it turns yellow then slam your brakes and stop. Dont take that risk, its not worth it. The 50cc scoots do not have enough torque to "gun it" and beat the car turning in front of you, You are going to get run over and maybe killed. A 600cc motorcycle can win that match but not a 50cc scooter, No way. So just hit your brakes and stop at yellow lights.
