So for the past year a friend has been trying to schedule me to fix his daughters Genuine Buddy. We were both free this weekend and I went to look at it. I was fully expecting a 50cc 2T that needed a carb cleaning but found 125cc 4t. A little history, he bought it in California as a 16th Bday present for her, she's 25 and taking a gap year and wants it as transportation. They bought it used with 1500 miles. She has never ridden it and he only rode it once. When they moved they drained the oil and gas out of it. He filled it with oil when they got it here and I mean filled it. I looked it over and they suggested I take it with me, good thing I brought my scooter carrier. It had very low tires, a locked front brake. He had put gas in a month ago. It had a new battery that was low.
I decided to drain all of the fluids, rebuild the front calliper and change the plug. I got all of the unknown oil out, it takes the same oil filter as the Vespas so I had one. The only pain was removing the steering cover. It has 4 screws with big holes in the plastics with small of center holes for the screws. It was a scavenger hunt for the heads and just as hard the other way. The speedo cable had no slack so I loosened it at the wheel so I could get my big hands in. The brake went well and I got fresh fluid in. I have a HF pneumatic brake bleeder. It is one of the tools I recommend. It takes a miserable job and makes it doable. With just 1500 miles I left the valves that sounded fine and the CVT alone. The manual showed the air filter was cleaned at 1000miles so that stayed in. I must say it was pretty easy to work on and isn't a bad riding scooter. If I had a decent 50 to trade for it it would be my newest scooter. I'm going to get the Pink scoot on the road again as a loaner and learner until she gets her MC license and takes the Buddy on as her scoot.
Here are pictures from my test ride:
They are cute little scooters and well made.
Edit: That beat up Airstream is a drive through coffee shop. They also have chairs in front of what was a gas station and is now his office/storage and a bike shop. Its a great place to hang out and be distanced. There are 3 other guys on motorcycles that show up. They are all intrigued by my scooters and scooter riding.
