Hello, im back on the forums. I bought a scooter recently, a 1980 nc50 express, but it had nothing but trouble all over it. Had a very hard time trying to get it going and for what it is going to cost to get fixed, i can buy a brand new scooter instead.
I was researching for a while and found some in my price range. Keep in mind that this scooter would not be my daily driver, but only used for 1/4 of the year. I live in Erie, PA and good weather comes by every so often. I would consider myself average for maintenance and stuff like that. I know the parts to an engine and know how to replace them, such as that i know how to put new rings on, adjust carburetor, etc. I know very little on transmission issues, if any were to pop up. I am 5'9 180 lbs with 30 lbs cargo, if any.
I am in the market for a 49cc scooter. I was looking at Tao-Tao's and stuff like that. Nothing to expensive, because im only using it every so often. I seen 95GTVert's videos on that tao-tao project, that kind of scooter.
As of every new scooter guy, i have a few questions:
1. If parts were to go bad, are new ones readily available to buy online? 2. Are there performance parts for tao-tao's? 3. Tao-Tao's sound like a scooter for me? If not, specify please. 4. Are there any online dealerships reliable on Tao-Tao's?
Thanks so much, please provide as much info as possible, i can use it for sure!
- Ben

Welcome back. 1) Very plentiful. Search eBay for "139QMB" to get some idea. 2) Big bore kits, big valve heads, cams, stroker cranks, pre-built stroker short blocks, CVT upgrades, gear ups, intakes, carbs, air filters, exhausts.... 3) TaoTaos and other Chinese scooters are good for people that like working on their scooter and performing regular maintenance. If reliability is concern #1 then buy a used Yamaha, Honda, or Kymco though. 4) 49ccscoot.proboards.com/thread/5617/familygokarts-com-scooter-buying-experience

Taotao is cheap to buy but expensive for upkeep, you are better off spending a few more bucks for a scooter that will be more reliable with better quality control like Bintelli, Meiduo, SYM, Qlink/Keeway or Genuine. the only people i know that can get a Taotao to be a reliable scooter are mechanics that ride them. I work on scooters and 90% of the breakdowns are Taotao and VIP.
