I gave a Lance Charming to my Step Son this summer. It started making noise he said. Turns out the bottom on the crankcase is damaged with a chunk out of it and no gear oil in the transmission. I have the original engine to this scooter as this was a replacement. That engine the original owner let run out of oil and scored the piston. So now I want to put the two together to make a whole. I am guessing the best thing to do is take the top end of that is good and add it to the one with the good case. thing is that the engine I replaced on the scooter till it was damaged was sweet. This little scooter was doing 41 mph and started so nce and easy.

If it is a 4 stroke and it ran out of oil, I would not put the top end on another motor without checking it out very well. Chances are that the top end also ran out of oil and could be damaged.
You will most likely find that the noise he is hearing is a rod or crank bearing that has spun, so the crank is likely damaged.
Replacing the parts on a GY6 is pretty cheap compared to a big name bike so I'd replace just about any wear surface you find, bearings, cylinder, piston, rings ect.

The damage to the engine was actually the drain pug for the gear oil. My Step Son had taken the scooter apart because it was not running properly. It layed in the garage a bit so I simply paid him for the abandoned scooter and did a valve job on it and got it running and put the plastics back on and sold it. It is my fault for simply just getting rid of it and not checking it out completely. Probably my Step Son hit that part of the engine against a curb or something. Long story short the guy who bought it said there was a lot of noise at speed and found the gear oil filler pug busted out with a chunk of the casing. I appologized and offered to fix it. I have it back in my possesion

Now I have removed the engine from the scooter and have a gasket set and switched the good cylinder onto the original engine, which had a fried piston. I got to the point last night where I was putting the rocker assembly in place and it was notsliding on easily. Stupidly I put the four bolts on and was easing it in place via criss cross bolting. Me idiot. It was late and I was tired and I did stupid. I snapped the rocker carriage. I thought to myself it was OK because I had another. When I got the other I saw that it was already cracked too!
I ordered a new one last night. something is causing the four studs to be out of position enough to cause my alignment problem. I do not want to crack the new one when I get it. Any advice?

I have revisited the scene of the crime this morning. I have two ruined seats that I had slid down on the studs before putting the rcoker assembly down. The rocker assembly was catching them on edge and I stupidly tried bolting it down. Now I have two mishapen seats that will not now slide off the studs. I am not sure how to get them off.

Youy mean the little metal locator sleeves? You can usually work them off with vice grips if the get crushed or you can carefully cut them off.

yes the locator sleeves. I will try to work them off with a vise grips first. Just goes to show never do something when it is late and you are tired.

Trust me I've learned that lesson... sorta. Still do it sometimes.

I could not get them off with a vise grips so I had to cut them off. They were a little hard to get to and I had to take extra care not to get metal filings in the cylinder.

I received and installed the new rocker cradle. I mounted the engine to the scooter and the baby fired right up. I still have to do a lot. but it appears that it will work fine. I sold my Malaguti today. I will have this little 50cc I am working on out of the garage in a couple of days too. I really got a lot of statisfaction working on these scooters. I am going to miss it.

Glad you got the QMB going. Sad to see the Malaguti go, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

An old washer and dryer and an old Refrigerator sold on craigslist were the source of the seed money to buy three scooters. two scooters were non running. the third one had major body issues. I have now sold all three for a profit and the money paid for my Suzuki with a little money to spare. This is how I justify the motorcycle purchase to my Wife.

Glad you got the QMB going. Sad to see the Malaguti go, but you gotta do what you gotta do. Yep running fine. this is the first time I have taken apart the top end of a 4 stroke so to have it crank over right away like it did is pretty rewarding. It is all put together now and it is running fine. It is basically stock so it is only doing 36mph on the flat but it has really good pick up off the line. Actually the belt is worn so I think a new belt will get it up around 40 mph. Here is a photo of it.
