I have a 150 out in the shop that needs a starter. I took the old starter apart and it was full of oil. That means that engine oil was getting into it right? That can't be normal., or is it? I've never had to take one apart before. It smelled horribly burnt inside. It had a nasty electro-chemical smell.

Yeah they are supposed to be dry. I went out and studied the starter real close and it seems the starter meshes with a gear/clutch that's wet and the starter motor has a seal around the shaft inside that goes bad I guess. There was a lot of side play in the motor shaft. Just ordered 2 new 150 starters off eBay. $56 shipped from Houston Priority.
