Hi guys and gals! Yes, I'm new so I thought I'd throw in a little introduction here. I'm new to scoots and pretty excited! I actually went scooter shopping to find my girlfriend an efficient and affordable ride to work, she commutes 6 miles each way where as I commute 26 miles each way. In the process of looking, I've learned a bit but still have a while to go. I ended up buying a used 2007 Baccio VX50 from a friend for $400. It runs and seems sound, needs work though and has been kept outside so there's some fading and body work to be done. I've come to the conclusion that it will be a project bike for me more than anything. We are looking for something for her a bit newer and more reliable, I may have a dealer holding a used scoot that was abandoned for her so in the meantime she will ride the Baccio for now. So yeah, originally was shopping for her, but now we will both have one! I have so many questions and have so much to learn. I just thought I'd say hey!
PS. I am in Hobe Sound, FL. Where it seems there aren't many scooter shops or dealers that I know of yet. I know there's a ton down south, but I wish there were more local because driving a 50cc that far just isn't too safe. Anyways. HI!

Welcome jhobe! I'm in Stuart. You've got Jupiter Scooters down by you. What's your budget for the girlfriend? I've bought and sold a few scooters from Craigslist.

Well I found one at 1stop down in North Palm, she has one they did a 70cc upgrade to and she likes the colors. I'm looking for under $1,000. The problem is I need it through a dealer because I'm using a credit card, I don't have the cash. I already had to pull a cash advance for my Baccio, that's going to hurt lol. I went to Jupiter, she was strange and didn't have a whole lot of selection, but she's about the same price new as anyone else I've seen. Just a few hundred more than I can spare. I'm already looking into what it would take to upgrade the motor in my Baccio. I was wondering if it's possible to throw a 150cc motor in it, since it's such a big frame I'd imagine it can handle it. The scoot that 1Stop has they said will do an easy 45mph which my gf said would be plenty for her around town.

If cash is tight be careful with upgrades. For one it gets addictive and the BBK isn't enough and you want an exhaust and a new transmission and upgears. But also stock scooters that are well maintained tend to be the most reliable. Lower power puts less stress on everything. That's not to say you can't have a modified scoot that is reliable, just a word of caution and something to consider. The 150 stock engine would prob do what you want, but the issue there is often legality. Not sure how it is where you are, but in some areas they are strict on this stuff and some they pay no mind. Some threaten with operating an unregistered motorcycle and not having a motorcycle endorsement and uninsured motorcycle if you're caught on a scoot with a larger than 50cc engine not tagged as a motorcycle. Engine swaps are just bad for this because they can be identified at a glance. A big bored stock motor still looks stock. The other FL folks here can prob tell you more of what to expect in your area. Not trying to be a downer, just things to consider as you choose your path.

You're not being a downer at all, that's good advice. The 150CC looks to be the same size from a glance to me, but I could be wrong. I'm more inclined to just put a big bore kit on this engine, once I get into it more. For now, she needs it to ride so I won't mess with it till she has her own. For now I've just got new mirrors, a plug and I need to pick up a fuel filter. Just my standards for buying a new vehicle. I've already topped off the oil and added some Seafoam to the gas just for starters. The engine is sound and runs great, I do need to check though and see why I have some oil coming from the air filter side. Otherwise all seems fair on it for now. I did wrench down on the throttle the other day and it came off in my hand. Just the handle. Already have that on order and ready to be put on. I'm pretty mechanically inclined and have pretty much any tool I'd need for working on anything from electrical to mechanical. I do want to find some local places though for work I would rather take plus I need to find a place to get tires soon too I believe.

I'm not in an area with a lot of scooters around and the cops here were trained to spot a typical 150cc. I read a publicly posted document about new scooter laws for local police and that was included in there. The most common cover is pretty easy to ID vs others. If they check engine numbers then it doesn't matter what it looks like. Again, some areas prob don't pay attention to scooters at all. Oil seals leaking behind the variator are common with the 139QMB. If that's the case it'll prob leak oil out of the bottom of the CVT cover somewhere after riding. There's also a hose from the valve cover to the airbox pipe usually and that could crack or be damaged and oil may slowly accumulate and run down.

You'll do best ordering tires online. I used Dennis Kirk and got free shipping and installed them myself with a couple Harbor Freight irons I bought. Others have ordered from other places and done well.

I believe the motor is the 1PE40QMB in there, I haven't pulled it apart yet to confirm but it looks identical. When I get the time and feel like I won't leave her with a broken scoot to get to work, I'll take it apart and check for this. Thanks! And yeah, the laws here are pretty clear on it. I wouldn't do it to get away with it or avoid getting the endorsement. I'm actually going to look into getting it soon just to have it really. I have friends and family that all ride motorcycles and what not, so it can't hurt really to have it. I just want to give what I have more pep I guess. I'm still learning though and need to see what I can do to what I have. [/quote]

If that's the motor than it's a 2t and that's great news for mods and gaining speed.

Oh, nice. I'm so used to cheap 4Ts popping up I guess I just assumed that's what it was without much thought. In that case I'd first look over the oil injection system for leaks. Seals can leak on these, but don't usually produce much oil, and you don't have a valve cover vent as described on a 2T.

The motor is a Minarelli Jog / Yamaha motor so I'd assume it has to be halfway decent if Yamaha associates with it. I'd love to talk shop about it. I know very minimal of 2stroke motors.

I'm still tuning my latest motor build. Last wide open run on Kanner Hwy was 68mph. I ran a consistent 64 on the previous motor with a bbk, pipe, carb, reeds, and some transmission goodies. That motor has the stock crank and was turning 10,500 rpms. This one 12,500.

Yeah, I'll have to wait till I can actually take the time to tinker with it and not worry about her not having a ride. I'll be sure to come back and post about it if I see any issues I can't solve.
