Nube here. I just upgraded my vip to 100cc bbk. It doesn't go much faster top speed about 50. Id like to get up to about 55-60 range for my top speed. Kit was from 02starrider, new head piston cam carb exhaust cdi basically everything. Could it be a valve lash prob? I don't have a .004 gauge to check. Rollers are stock but do have 8g weights I still need to put in. Anybody got any suggestions? Thanks

First, feeler gauges that go down to 0.002" are a worthwhile investment if you're going to work on your scooter. They should be under $10. You may have a valve lash issue, but if they aren't clattering really loud and it starts easily, I don't know that they're your trouble. BTW, most soda cans are about 0.004" thick. I tend to use 0.002-0.003" these days, but I'd rather set them to 0.004" than totally guess at it. Most scooters will run out of either power or gearing or both at the speeds you are doing. It could be that you need some CVT work or a final drive gear swap. It would be easier to tell if you have a tach.

Thanks, I kinda figured as much. The tip about the soda can will help for the time being. I do have a tac, Im pretty sure it just about maxes out but am unsure. I don't know if its accurate. How much will a gear swap cost? Im a broke mfer. Thanks again.

Depends where you get the gears I guess. Check out PFS and ScrappyDogScooters for prices on the gear sets. Get a gasket for the gearbox. You can usually get a whole gasket set for the engine for about $10-$15 on eBay IIRC. I would at least check the condition of all bearings while you're in there. If it's got many miles on it, plan on replacing bearings and seals. Prob $35-$50 depending where you get them. You'll also need gear oil. I prefer synthetic like Mobil 1 75W90 so a quart is $10-15, but that will last about 8 gear oil changes.
Could be as cheapo as the gearset and if you're lucky all is well and maybe you can get away with reusing the gasket, or you could spend quite a bit if you check it all over and end up replacing bearings and seals.

Thanks! Fixed lifters. much better now. But now im getting a lil hesitation on take off and backfire when going wot to stop. TO much fuel? It kinda aggravates me because its a constant work in progress but on the other hand it gives me something to do. Wish I had the money for one of those real turbo kits. They are bad ass!

Try setting the needle richer (move the clip down) or a step larger main jet.

I've read that backfiring can also be an exhaust leak- that's on 2t's tho- not sure if 4t's do it too...

It can backfire from an exhaust leak on a 4T as well.

Ok, Heres another one for you. On this moped I picked up for 20 bucks, when its idling there is a ticking sound coming from I believe its called the variator. Where the roller weights are. Its not the gear. But when even just a little throttle is used it goes away? Also with the starter. I took apart and it looked good. Put it back together and when I tried it It would not hit the gear or did not have enough power. I took the pully cover off and the gears meshed well. Im trying to fix this one up for my girl. So I definitely need the electric start to work. Sorry for all the Questions.

I forgot, What is the biggest size tire I can fit on the back of a vip? I have a Honda ruckus tire on the front but it definatley would not fit on the back. Thanks again

Rollers rattle around at idle. You can make sure they're in good condition, but it's pretty normal.
Got 12.5V or better getting to the starter?

got power but not sure how much? My house got robbed a few mpnths ago, all my shit was taken so Im starting all over, without much money. I even need new clothes. Its really messed up story. So do you know about rear tire size on the vp? went to check the the valve lash and the cam cover is cracked? Its the second one. I figured the first one was because I overtightened but the second one I know I didn't! WHY ME???

You mean the rocker assembly is cracked or the valve cover? Valve cover could be something hitting it. Rocker assembly cracking twice would worry me. Sure they're the right ones (64/69mm valve lengths)? Everything lining up... valves and rockers making solid contact?
Not sure on the tire size. Does yours have the 12" wheels on a long case or is that a short case with 10" wheels? Sorry, haven't been around the VIPs much.

Heres my luck, Riding the vip to go see my kids. Atarts riding weird like the rear tire is slipping and I pull over to check it out. Oil all over the place! WTF?? Fill it with oil and make it to see my kids. Check it out and find that oil is spewing out of the valve cover tube. What is wrong? most people say its a cracked cylinder. Any other positive outcome?? Something easy to fix that doesn't cost money? 10 inch wheels
