I would be very interested to see Brent put one on his TT with a before and after 0-30 time maybe a top speed also. I'm just not big on all the scientific method, and anyway hard to even try with no speedo. I ordered 2 a few days ago. I'm sure they'll end up on the TaoTao someday. I've done squat with it lately because of the 2Ts and the 150 issues, but I will try 'em out sooner or later.

Thinking of doing the same thing, I have the 1p39qmb long case and obviously the belt doesn't sit on top of the pulley. Probably part of the speed restriction. Stock belt is 723-18-30, I'm thinking of 729 or 788 but not sure how big is too big. Any suggestions?

788 is a big jump. 729 may not do much. There's a Bando 738-18-30. That may be worth a try.

I too have a small amount of unused variator and a totally tuned CVT. I have the 788-17-28 as of now. I am sure it would be a belt for something Mina over range.

I couldn't find a cheapo 738, but I did find a $8 728, I don't want to spend $35/40 on a belt that may not fit.
I got the $8 one for testing purposes, it'll be here Monday, if it works I'll go for the bando. Maybe be more willing to try the 738 if I still have room on the pulleys.

That may be worth a try. there are 756x18x30 belts out there too. don't remember where I got it but I have one on my piaggio. linkthis is all I can find but its in Europe, I'm sure if you tried hard enough you might find a domestic source. come to think of it I think that is where I ordered mine from

Well got the cheapo (729) belt on and maybe got a little more speed out of it, not sure if its placebo or not. I'll know tomorrow when I go to work, I hope it'll last a while. I had to ask the neighbor for his impact to pull off the variator to get the stupid thing on.

Hate to revive an old thread but it's applicable to what I'm doing. I've started tuning on my CVT and have a few more weight sets coming. To check and see if I could benefit from a larger belt, I need to mark up the variator with a wedge shape black area, right? Then whatever is left is where the belt hasn't gone. I've got a short case with a stock 669 belt atm and currently running +1k blue contra and clutch, 5g Dr pulley sliders. Stock weights were 5g and bought 4 and 6g rollers to do some testing with. Currently peaking at 35mph indicated, and my speedometer was previously only 1mph fast so I assume it still is the same, GPS app decided to crap today.

My 50cc Thunder came with 5gr rollers and a 729 belt. In stock setup the belt showed not reaching top of variator by ~1/4”. No pic of variator travel, sorry, could do if you want tho. Greg

Well, I've now tested 4g, 5g (stock), 5g sliders, 6g, and 5g sliders modded to 6g with foil. 4g is way too light, peak at 30mph; 5g stock peak at 34-35mph, 5g slider peak at 35 mph, 6g peak at 33mph, 6g modded sliders peak at ~35mph on first test run. 6g indicated 3mm left of untraveled belt range, 5g sliders left 5mm, 4g roller left 10mm. I haven't checked the belt travel on the 6g slider mod as I haven't done much riding with it like that, just a quick trip out and back. I'm starting to think 5-5.5g slider is my best bet and maybe a longer belt but I'm not positive and don't want to waste money on a belt I can't use.

Definitely try the 5.5g setup to see how it does. Won't cost anything but time with the supplies you have. Hopefully you'll find that sweet spot and squeeze the most from your combo.

Popped the 5.5g roller combo in but too cold and wet to try. I've had a slight bit of squeaking when the clutch starts to engage, I assumed maybe it was slipping a bit at start, so I just sanded the bell a bit and wiped it out, wiped the pads off. I know when I did the contra spring swap, my vice bit into a pad slightly but didn't look to be significant enough. I don't notice any odd feeling, just the squeal as the wheel engages, and that's really noticeable when the choke is on. Is there anything I need to look at in particular?

You covered the basics. Blueing of the clutch / bell and rapid glazing may tell you the clutch is slipping. Lots of belt dust and/or black streaks on the pulleys may point to belt slip.
