Well here today it is 24 degrees F with a windchill of 15 degrees and I decided to take my scoot to the store as it is only like 3/4 mile each way. It took a while to warm up the scoot and I took off...I had my leather jacket and gloves on and a hat and my face was frozen in like 5 seconds after hitting 40 mph! Yes, I have a face mask but since I was just going up the road, I didn't think I needed it. Well...I did. My speedo was iced over as was my seat. I have a rain cover but it snowed here last night and this morning so it was almost frozen to my scooter. Roads were clear so I didn't have to worry about all of that horsepower from my 49cc 4T making me slide.
Not a bad trip really and it was better than firing up my minivan with 240,000 miles on it just to go that short distance...I have to baby that thing if it is going to last. I was happy to be home and I was thinking about Brent and some of his cold weather riding videos and decided that I might be a p*ssy because if i had to ride 5 miles each way...I would/could not have done it. Good news was the beer was ice cold when I got home...and that is the main thing.

I keep my scooter inside now, parked by the computer desk in the living room. The wife isn't too thrilled but Big Red is part of the family and deserves to stay warm. I'm going to have to ride it tomorrow to work at it'll be in the low 20's. That's gonna suck.

Minus -9 in Boone this morning, putting the windchill at around -24. Too bad my new scooter is in the shop, supposed to be 38 and sunny Wednesday...

It was -22f low temp saturday night with 15mph winds, didn't get above ten below sunday. Decided to take the scoot out for its December ride. I saw you guys talking about dickies gear, heavy duty gloves, etc but why not try some stuff designed for below freezing, wot across a lake snowmobiling? That gear is windproof, has a durable dry shell, a buffer layer, then boatloads of thinsulate insulation. Add your layers underneath, amd make sure to cross your layers (tuck your thermal shirt into your thermal drawers, your longsleeve into your jeans, sweatshirt over) so you don't get windblown at the waist. Or a dickie for your neckline... www.amazon.com/Schampa-Tall-Neck-Dickie-Black/dp/B001AWJMV0

I realized last week when it gets in the low 20's and the scoot has been sitting outside it will not start. Apparantly the valves lash shrinks. When it gets time to warm up in an ambient temperature it starts right up.

When it gets time to warm up in an ambient temperature it starts right up. Might be a mixture problem also. Mine is a bit hard to get going when it is that cold outside. I have to use the accelerator pump to squirt gas in there to start it until the enricher kicks in. Then after the enricher cuts off, it is still not warmed up enough to take any gas so I have to keep playing with the throttle for about 5 minutes...then all is fine. I was thinking of setting it a bit richer for the winter...might try that this weekend except, get this, supposed to be 65 here! Bill

Bill It also hard too kick, like the compression is too high, but like I said warm it up a little (usually above 40F) and it kicks right over no problem. I might take it out for a spin tomorrow, it'll get up into the 60's too. I gotta replace the thermostat in the car too. Fun fun.

Bill I am not convinced of that, just because a scooter is a scooter it still has a gas powered engine just like snow throwers etc do, and snow throwers are made to be used in the winter to remove snow, obviously those DO start up and run. The one we have at work is an older one with one of those disposable Briggs or Techumseh engines, and a manual choke, it always starts up fine so why shouldn't a scooter do the same even at zero degrees like the snow thrower does? My TaoTao 50 sits outside 24/7 since I don't have a garage. I ride my 2012 TaoTao 50 all winter here in Iowa, even when it's been near zero I still ride to and from work every day and to the store on it. I think part of the key is it's being used every day, not sitting in the garage for a month and then being used once or twice here and there. Also, I keep a new plug in it frequently during the winter because they do foul up and makes it harder to start, with a fresh plug you get the max spark power that you know hasn't faded a bit due to fouling or wear. MUST change the oil in the winter much more frequently due to condensation etc getting in it that doesn't get burned out very easily on short trips. Here's my pic for today, I just came back from shopping, it's about 20 degrees and everything is coated with ice, including the stores' parking lot and my road to the main road is also iced over solid, the windshield and mirrors are iced over. I changed the oil and plug plast weekend, now it has 5400 on the chinometer and still runs great with no issues. It was blown over about 4 weeks ago when I was at work, broke the ball tip off the front brake lever- again! but other than that and some gas leakage, it was fine.

Thunderstorms for Christmas in Iowa, it's still 45 so the streets are pretty much clear of snow and ice, couple of 40 plus days this week, might actually get a short ride on the new scoot Tuesday or Wednesday.

Those storms were crazy! Melted most all our snow, stuck around above freezing, then had a day of 40mph winds in the 20s and froze it up so its just ice everywhere. Unless i get studded tires, i think my rides are done til february...
