Hello.
Has anyone ever tried the spark plug side-gap mod?

yes, it does what its supposed to, including the part about not lasting as long

just stick a good NGK plug in it and be done with it.

If you want a better spark get a NGK Iridium plug. 3 times the price of a regular plug (but worth it).
Use the regular NGK's until you have the carb tuned with the right jets, the put the Iridium plug in.

or just get 3 regular plugs and side gap them. I honestly think there is more to gain from spark plug indexing.
side gapping does work. as with just about anything though, it has its pros and cons. the only real con is you have to do something other than buy a more expensive part. go to any drag strip and I bet there are more people side gapping than running "performance" plugs

Could you explain what the side gap is. This is a new one to me.

I think having either a side gapped plug or out of the box performance plug really needs a higher voltage to really be beneficial, small things in conjunction can make big differences.

That's what the high performance coils are for. They put out a higher voltage which ignites the fuel better. The trick is finding one that actually is high performance (or racing).

It seems to me that if this mod works, it could cause detonation or at least put some increased stress on the ignition system. On my personal bikes, I've really wondered if ignition mods besides timing curves are really necessary. Most of the time I'm looking for COLDER firing plugs, not hotter spark. But then again, I have 2t bikes. I'm sure 4t bikes have a lot more to gain from this kind of stuff.

I higher voltage coil, side gapped and indexed plugs all together will make a noticeable difference. but just this alone isn't all that much. but paired with other performance mods. if your goal is performance every little bit helps. now with indexed iridium vs indexed gapped stock. I would say it will vary between different head designs. and also asking more from the coil, means a better coil is needed.

and yes 4 strokers tend to run it richer than a 2 stroker can without fouling. so a hotter plug might be more forgiving on a 4 stroke

remember these scooters already have a CDI type ignition, which is about as high of a voltage as you are going to get, the only major improvement I can think of is to adapt a coil on plug from a junkyard car, in place of the stock coil, it should work fine as long as it clears everything, MSD is also a capacitive discharge ignition. compared to the old magneto type ignitions from back in the day, these ignitions are great, anyone over 40 in here has cussed at a lawnmower or minibike magneto at some point, the young guys don't know how great they have it

Ngk has plugs that come like that I think.. I'd swear I've seen them. I don't think they cost too much, there is quite a variety of stuff they offer.
