I’m with Geoff, it seems when I’ve heard metal jingling, it’s been because I rushed and did not install my variator fan nuts/washers properly OR they were NOT TIGHTENED down enough. You must pull your TD spring back to the clutch to get slack on the belt that way you can evenly tighten down your variator nut. I would certainly pull your cover as soon as possible and find out if this is the case, otherwise you run the risk of damaging the splines on your crankshaft.

I figured I would post on this thread because people are reading about variators . So I just installed a new Malossi variator ( Multivar ) the other day and have had problems ever since. The backplate was hanging up on the slider clips on install and thought that had been the problem . I rode it last night and the other day and I had started hearing this tin tink tink sound , don't know where its coming from . It sounds like if you had other keys on your key chain riding down the road and they clanking around slightly. I thought perhaps the slider clips were torn up, but they were fine. BUT what I just noticed different from before( old variator) on reinstalling just now again , the belt is not touching the sides of the variator pulley sheives. I see each side has room so it appears it is not catching. Any advise would be appreciated . Also Both bosses seemed to be the same length when I installed the new. what about putting a shim/washer behind the roller ramp plate?

not sure if im late to the party or not but ive used some of the different variators on the market. stock tytpes that were smaller than my stock one? off brand aftermarket ones ill never use again. malossi multivar and finally real malossi overrange. if your not opposed to ditching your electric start the overrange is the best one ive tried and havent had a need for anything else since then. you twist the throttle and it revs up to whatever rpm your weights set the rpms at and holds them till belt travel is finished. somewhere around 10-15 mph over the stock oversized variator my bike had. with a stock regular size one im guessing it would be about a 20 mph difference but you need a malossi belt for the overrange and they last a good while. atleast 5k miles before ive replaced just to be safe. i now have 3 spare belts incase i do have a problem and am on my 4th belt with the overrange still working fine and dont miss the electric start one bit as the gains greatly outweighed the loss.
