i have an Amigo 50cc with upgraded carb, performance air cleaner and exhaust that is extremely hard to start when its cold. the bike runs and starts fine once its warmed up, but needs a little shot of ether to get it going cold. i just adjusted the valves because that was suggested as a remedy but was no help at all. looking for other suggestions?

Start it up and let it warm then adjust the idle mixture screw... helps in 8/10 cases

Check your compression.

If the engine does not idle 'faster than normal' upon startup from cold, then the carburetor is suspect. The enrichment mechanism should bump the idle speed at the same time it provides a richer-than-normal mixture. If it is not working, the engine will be more difficult to start, and likely not idle faster than normal. tom

someone suggested to me a hotter spark plug? No, that does not have anything to do with cold starts.

i adjusted the idle mix screw and scooter ran perfect, i let it sit for about 2 hrs and won't start again, any other suggestions? i saw the post about the spark plug, i guess no sense even going with the NGK C5HSA

Next thing I would check is compression, if you are using some type of "racing" cdi that could also cause this problem

Give it a shot.

Have you tried cracking the throttle? This is a carb, not fuel injection.

If your engine runs great when warm as you describe then quit messing with the normal circuit. Your diagnosis points to the over rich circuit, most commonly referred to as the "choke".
Two types of "choke". A actual choke restricts air to create a over rich air/fuel mix needed by a cold engine. A enricher also creates a over rich air/fuel mix by adding fuel. Once the engine warms up the over rich circuit needs to be shut off because a warm engine doesn't have to be run over rich.
Most of these carbs use a auto-enricher (the electric connections on the carb). A photo would be nice to display what you have to be sure.
Your description, if accurate, points to a problem with the enricher. Some enrichers are limited in what they do and can have a hard time compensating if the normal circuit is adjusted too lean but you need to start out by confirming that the enricher is working.
You listed a lot of modifications. Who did the work and who tuned it to run good after warm up?
