Hi all, I'm new to this forum, but I've been lurking for a couple weeks. Today, I installed a rear tire on my scooter and got her all put back together and for some reason she doesn't want to go now. She idles fine and I can open the throttle until I can feel her begin to take off and then she stalls. She starts back up, but stalls the same way each time. Two side notes... I went to install a new spark plug and didn't realize that the new one was the wrong size, so I cleaned the old one and put it back in place. The end that sparks was oily, but not worn at all. Second, before the issue started, I put a paper towel on the exhaust pipe briefly while it was running. (Don't ask me why) It didn't stall but it slowed the engine down. I probably had it on for just under a second. I'm wondering if I caused a clog in the exhaust pipe. Oh, and after she stalled a couple times, I removed the exhaust completely, and although really loud, I couldn't get her to stall again. But then again, I didn't get on and ride, just revving her up. Lastly, yesterday I installed a speedo cable, but it worked fine after that job. Any suggestions would be great. She's a 2-stroke with well over 12,000 miles and no mods. I've only owned her for less than a month, so I don't know much about the previous care. Thank you.

Sure the spark plug threads in the cylinder head are in good condition after using the wrong plug? Didn't knock the airbox lose or a hose or anything like that while doing the other work?

With that many miles and its age...the fuel line rubber tends to break down and one piece of rubber even tinier than a human hair will plug the Pilot Jet(low speed jet) Also as Brent said..double check and make sure your airbox is on and tightly sealed. 2 Strokes run poorly and typically not at all with an air leak..or airbox leak.

Thanks. I'll take another look tomorrow. The threads on the spark plug were identical to the original. It was only the post end that was too big. Does blowing compressed air into the exhaust pipe do anything good or bad? If it was blocked, would it help?

I wouldn't worry about the paper towel causing a clog. If anything, 12,000 miles of 2T exhaust would be more likely to clog up the pipe. Most remove the pipe and fill it with caustic soda to let it eat away at the oil and carbon inside for a while.

caustic soda? like cola? or were you referring to something else?

ah, NaOH. okay. I didn't know this is called "soda," only drain cleaner, lye, etc. So I can just soak metal parts in this to get rid of carbon?? I wonder... soak entire cylinder kit in drain cleaner? Would this harm the paint finish?

Ok, I got the carb all apart and blasted to perfection with carb cleaner. Got it back together and nothing. It turns over but it doesn't start up. I'm on my way to get starter fluid as I ran out just as I needed it. I'm hoping that's the problem now. I'm optimistically hopeful.

Would this harm the paint finish? Not sure. I've never actually used it. Just read about it it's successes in 2T pipes. I guess swapping pipes a lot, 50:1, and constant WOT keeps mine clean.

I'm back to the drawing board. Starter fluid hasn't helped. Now battery is mostly dead and the kickstart isn't turning it over either. Do I take the carb apart again?

Have you still got spark?
Air filter clean/nothing clogging the airbox?
Compression OK?

Filter is fine, but I'll need to replace the gasket for the air filter case. The old one was worn but I was careful to seat it back perfectly. The o ring for the autochoke will also need replaced, but I got the old one to work, too. No one in town stocks parts for this year vino, so I have to order everything via Internet. I'm not sure on the spark plug anymore. I have to go buy a compression tester and multimeter.

Hallelujah! It's seems as though the battery was the issue this time. I cleaned the carb twice, and all those restart tries must have drained the battery. It turned over right away with the charged battery. I thought I could kickstart it without the battery. I ended up with a bruised foot from kicking all day long. I feel like such an accomplished idiot. Thanks for the sparkplug advice. Nice that I could test it without buying anything.
