My Tao Tao Powermax 150 CVT cover runs really hot, and I have to believe the belt is frying in there. It seems clear that ventilation could help this, and perhaps make for longer CVT life. But it also seems clear that unless one goes to great lengths to filter high volume air intake, dirt, grit, & grime will also make their way in, maybe causing other problems.
Is there consensus on this? The manufacturer could easily vent it for the same cost ...

I vent all of mine. Really haven't had any issues with it for my use (including dirt roads and standing water at times). If I had to ride all the time in rain or snow I'd think about how to vent it in a way that the belt was least likely to get wet though. I ran one through 8-10" of water with a vent half the size of the clutch bell and it slipped for about 5 seconds after it and then was fine. Those pulley faces still run hot vented so they will burn off small amounts of water. To be fair though, I do check any of my CVTs with some regularity so I can't tell you what would happen if it were vented and you never touched it for 5000 miles. I've gone a couple thousand without messing with them before and still belt dust was more prevalent than any external substance.

It seems to make sense, and you've been successful doing it. It begs the question why more manufacturers don't do it as shipped.
Makes you wonder - "am I missing something here?"
The other approach might be a finned heat sink type CVT cover, but we don't see that either.

Some of the 2Ts have vented covers, but then they run a plastic cover over the cover. They usually have an air filter in the front vent. I guess you have to play it safe as the manufacturer. If it's all sealed at least there's not a risk of anything getting in and banging around or contaminating grease more quickly or slipping in rain.

I've had the CVT cover off, but, looking at it again, I see there is a small inlet at the front with a plastic mesh screen plug inserted, and a small curved outlet at the rear.
This would seem to be a compromise between amount of air and contaminants reduction.

Yes, it seems like everything sold in mass amounts these days has to be idiot proof to avoid lawsuits or even less just avoiding a bad wrap for the products. per say they sold scooters with big vents in the cvt cover and people keep dropping rocks in the holes, or stick there fingers in there, then all the sudden the scooter is "crap" because it breaks down or because it cuts the tips of your fingers off. For example a 2015 Yamaha R1 "full race bike" supposedly for all out racing on a track and flying at 150 plus mph still has reflectors on it! lol

I work at a motorsports dealer and always thought, Wouldnt the bikes sell better if they came with a fender eliminator kit? but there you go, needs to be idiot proof
